Greetings renowned sages. Can anyone speculate on the great evil that will arise, signified with the Comet K'Thoutek appearing in the Galleon Nebula? Astrologers predicted the birth of Elminister when the comet was first seen, and then birth of the Simbul with K'Thoutek on the verge of entering the nebula (meaning she would be good or evil) Now they have agreed that K'Thoutek will appear in the Galleon Nebula and that person will be extremely powerful and evil. Any thoughts or speculation on this matter?

Here's hoping they don't try to make an adventure path the same way they tried doing it for DDI.

Halastar‘s return, of course!
What else could this silly comet portend?

Although there‘s no reason this Great Individual needs to be mortal. A deity could be born (or reborn) as well.

So the comet might point out a person, or one of the other things mentioned above...

Most inanimate objects don't have an alignment.

At most, they get TV shows.

According to the Ruins of Adventure, this is the year that Tyranthraxus escapes his imprisonment and possesses a bronze dragon. Seems that the comet should portend something else, but this does line up with the lore.

The Manshoon idea, however, seems to be more likely. Only 18 years later, in 1258, Manshoon and Asmuth have come of age and are sent out by their father to prove themselves.

It looks like it comes from SJR2 Realmspace, a Spelljammer supplement.

The official word on the existence of crystal spheres in 3e is... indeterminate.

Here's Rich Baker's thoughts on the subject -

quote:
quote:
Well, we haven't had cause to decide one way or the other. If you want my opinion, I think the crystal shell's still there. No reason that Faerun's stars need to be other suns zillions of miles away; it's a fantastic universe.
And, again -

quote:
I meant that at some interplanetary distance, Realmspace ends at the inside of the big crystal sphere. Stars are actually big glowing things on the inside surface of that sphere. Maybe there's a night-black ocean on the inside of that sphere, and you can sail around amid the stars and find all sorts of strange islands and wondrous things there.

I think the cosmology is perfectly workable if you assume that's it for the Material Plane in which Toril sits. The universe is a finite size of 50 AUs, or something like that. Or, possibly, other crystal spheres bob around elsewhere deep in the phlogiston. Fritz Leiber's Nehwon has a somewhat similar cosmology.

None of that is official, BTW. We know that there's Realmspace, other worlds in Realmspace, and folks that have flying ships for moving around between them. But we haven't stated in 3E whether the whole thing's encapsulated in a crystal sphere or not, and if so, whether it's a finite or infinite Material Plane.
We know that spelljamming, to a degree, is still "officially" recognised, at least according to Lords of Madness.

Sorry guys, I should have provided more information. KnightErrant is right that the Realms crystal sphere has limited dimensions, (I didn't know crystal spheres/spelljamming were used in 3ed as its been eons since I purchased realms products) being about 6.4 billion miles in diameter. KE is also probably right in that the predictions depend on who views the event at the time. (The following is mostly paraphrased from the spelljammer realmspace accessory) Its only visible within 200 million miles of the Sun and travels perpendicular to the planetary orbital paths, taking about 237 years for a complete orbit around the Sun. It would be interesting to note all the occurrences of K'Thoutek appearing throughout the ages and there is usually a wide divergence in predictions when it is seen. But its appearance in the visible Torilian skys is usually seen as the birth or arrival of a very powerful entity. It could be a long time before K'Thoutek appears in the Galleon Nebula indicated by the passage on page53 of the realmspace accessory "After much debilitation, they have come to the conclusion that the next appearance of Comet K'Thoutek will be in the Galleon Nebula, signifying that the next potent person to enter the Realms is destined to be very evil. The astrologers hope that Elminster and the Simbul are still around to combat this impending menace." (I hope I didn't break any rules by quoting offical material, please tell me and will edit this post) Anyway I think it will be much more powerful than Manshoon (it just might not mean a birth but an arrival) and can anyone find more celestial appearances whether it be in Alaundo's scrolls or any other records?
KnightErrantJR Posted - 09 Jul 2005 : 04:34:04
First off, Spelljamming wise the nebula isn't "ligh years away" since the entire crystal sphere isn't that large. Even were it that far away, I'm pretty sure that most prophesies are based on when the comet would be visible to those who could interpret it, not when the actual celestial event occured.
Smyther Posted - 09 Jul 2005 : 04:06:03
Ah, but how far away is that nebula in light years? For all we on Toril know, the comet may have actually entered thirty years or more ago, and that great evil may now being mature.
So the sages, not knowing about light-years, would be quite right in realising that as soon as they see the comet enter, the evil is only now just getting ready to strike.
Actually, this is quite interesting information. Where did you hear about the comet's legend and its current state?
Kentinal Posted - 09 Jul 2005 : 03:11:30
Er not sure Astrologers know what they are talking about, however Elfen rising might indicate a Drow leader that unites the underdark communities in such a way that even Manshoon can not survive. *wink*

As for the birth of an evil as the comet enters there will be at least 10 years before even the quickest maturing race can even start to make a mark on lore or the realms themself. At current speed check back to 20 to 30 years to see whom the Manshoon claim they correctly perdicted was born.
Shadovar Posted - 09 Jul 2005 : 03:02:17
As powerful and evil as Manshoon himself?
