I assume that somewhere in the Realms, people make toasts, i.e. raise glasses/mugs/other containers to each other and say something witty, heartfelt or traditional.

Does anyone know something specific about the toasting habits of various cultures in the Realms? Waterdeep, the North, Heartlands, Cormyr, Dragonreach, Moonsea, Impiltur, Damara and Thesk, the Unapproachable East, Old Empires, Shining South, Chondath and Vilhon Reach, the Lands of Intrigue and elsewhere on the Sword Coast, etc.?

And does anyone know of traditional toasts, the equivalent to Earth toasts like:

  • To wives and sweethearts (may they never meet!)

  • A willing foe and sea room.

  • May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
    And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

  • Here's to dear old Boston,
The home of the bean and the cod,
Where Lowells speak only to Cabots,
And Cabots speak only to God.

Or just any Realms toasts at all?

Master Icelander,

Here is a compilation of phrases that includes a moderate amount of salutations, cheers, toasts, etc. It is not 100% though.

Best regards,

Granted, these serve as farewells, but they could easily be a toast

Until next, may your sword be ever wet, and your bottom dry Pirates of the Inner Sea

Alavairthae! (Al-ah-VARE-thay May your skill prevail) the Red Wizards of Thay, in giving their farewells.

Amarast! (Ah-mah-RAST Fare well until next we meet!) the sailors of the South

Olore(Oh-LOR-ay; Well met;Good day;), as travelers in the Inner Sea lands say Olore to you, my friends.

Sweet water and light laughter until next the People (Elves).

Aluve (Ah-LOO-veh I/we leave you) the Drow.

Axe high, friend. I go. Dwarvish farewell.

Forges warm, friend. Gnomish farewell.

Good morning, and good day after that! Don't let anything curl your hair! (to which is sometimes added) Ware that Big Folk, and mind the goblins too! , as the Halflings speak to each other; to others, they usually say, Gods smile! (upon you) /(for others rarely have the patience for the longer form).

Braeunk vhos trolkh! (If you die while I'm gone, do it quietly) Hobgoblin, with the unspoken addendum, because I wouldn't want to miss the fun.

The one that springs to mind most readily for me is the one on page 2 of Volo's Guide to Waterdeep:

quote:
A Toast to Waterdeep
Here's to the City of Splendors
Deep water where the edge of the sea
Meets rivers of gold; all the coins ever made
Flow past -- gods, throw some to me!
(A traditional toast, sung in the taverns of the Waterdeep)
