Anyone know what it is in the Archwood that "hungers for humans" and killed the group of loggers sent by Arkhendale in 1370 DR |

The 3e FRCS says that they weren't killed. It says the Swords ordered them to stop when they discovered ruins. However, there are People of the Black Blood and owlbears in there too.
The adventure "Secrets of the Arch Wood" also introduces a half-dragon elf with a bunch of half-fiend followers who did raid the Archendale logging camp. |

I also just noticed that Venomhindar's Knoll where he was buried alive (although no body so possibly not really dead) is none other than Haptooth Hill. |
