Posted - 08 Feb 2013 : 16:12:19 Are there, for example, any hobgoblins named in any of the novels or sourcebooks?
Same question for goblins, bugbears, dekanter goblins, and (if you feel like it) any other humanoid "monsters".
I'm kinda interested in a less humanocentric list of heroes. And antiheroes, though humanity has plenty of those.
I know I'm probably overlooking some obvious sources, but I'm coming up pretty blank. |

Posted - 13 Feb 2013 : 14:40:58 And there is the "fake" hobgoblin leader of the goblinoid mercenary force "The Chill", a human warrior reincarnated as a hobgoblin that leads a force of hobgoblin cavalry, some worg-mounted goblins, a force of ogres and a lot of kobold archers, IIRC. The name is Ardenor Crush, a F11 with some nice magic itens, and he is supported by a human mage that was his partner since before he was first defeated (and I think the mage was the one who cast the reincarnate spell).
Source: Gold & Glory, a 2e accessory on mercenary corps of the Forgotten Realms, with "Battlesystem" stats for each of these forces.
ERRATA: Ardenor is actually a F10. The wizard really reincarnated him, he is Grangor, a W13. The forces of the Chill are:
- The Frostriders: hobgoblins with battleaxes on heavy warhorses - The Winter Wolves: goblins with spears on winter wolves - The Coldsteel: orcish swordsmen - The Frigid Fists: ogrish shock troop - The Icicles: kobold archer ambushers |

Posted - 13 Feb 2013 : 09:34:28 Taken from Unapproachable east 3.5e, Page 188 under Giantspire entry:
The hobgoblins of the Giantspires are ruled by King Kardobbik (LE male hobgoblin Ftr12), a particularly dangerous warlord. The king’s primary advisor is Lady Farkattle (LE female hobgoblin Nec11). She has managed to animate the corpse of a long-dead, very old deep dragon that once made its home here but was slain in the war that brought the old empire of Narfell to a bloody end. This skeletal dragon looks like a dracolich to the uninitiated, but it is entirely under Farkattle’s control. Kardobbik uses this fearsome monster to keep the hobgoblin tribes of the Giantspires in line—no easy task.
I love finding lore like this.... |

Posted - 10 Feb 2013 : 19:54:14 There is also Terresk, a half-orc "armar" (sergeant) of Waterdeep's watch. He is really strong, and has manacles that reveal he was a slave in southern lands (Calimshan, I think). |

Posted - 09 Feb 2013 : 07:30:59 If you like hobgoblins you should read the Chosen of Nendawen series. While there are not many in the first book, the second and especially the third have a lot of them, including many scenes inside one of their settlements. |

Posted - 08 Feb 2013 : 19:36:01 I love that orc sidebar! I remember the kobolds article from something recently... probably when I was looking for the names of the Ice Lakes.
Ideally, I'd like to find at least one named NPC in canon for each of the intelligent races... meaning everything except vermin and animals. There aren't many intelligent constructs, but Squch counts.
I'm guessing there a few races for which nobody has developed an NPC yet, but... the ones that have been described should be gathered somewhere. |

Posted - 08 Feb 2013 : 17:17:26 There are far more orcs named in the sources, than any other humanoid race. The FRCS (3E) has a sidebar which gives some orc chieftain names. Hobgoblins are very thin on the ground in name terms. There are a few scattered in the sources, but nothing of any significance. Ed's old kobolds article in "Dragon" has a few kobold names. Goblins are relatively poorly represented also. I've long wished for a sourcebook on the goblinoids and orcs of the Realms. I don't think I'll see it produced in my lifetime though.

Posted - 08 Feb 2013 : 16:53:25 Your question also extends to half-orcs? I think there are others, but at this moment I only remember "Shield of Innocence" an orog paladin of Torm (!!!) found in the 2e Lands of Intrigue boxed set. |
