Hello Everyone,
I understand that Cormyr has fought many battles against goblins, but do you know if or when Cormyr has fought major battles against hobgoblin armies or hobgoblin proto nations?

I think the only conflict was the battle of bones, when hobgoblins were much more plentiful in the region. It is repeatedly stated in the ecologies about the stonelans and the battle of bones that the hobgoblin population suffered the most for they were always in the first ranks and fought the hardest durimg the battle of bones.
I personally think that the remaining ones have built their strength afterwards but keep a low profile and control everything in the stonelands from hidden strongholds and lairs.. Thls would also suit their way of thinking and behaviour as described by ed and tho.
I think the next or first real war between hobgoblins and cormyr could end the existance of cormyr, or parts of it, say west of their mountains, altogether.

Edit: I ment the only war where hobgoblins as well as Cormyr took part in greater numbers. |

Grodd is pretty well detailed in Into the Dragon's Lair. Grodd is a demiplane adjacent to the Prime and the Plane of Shadow. The adventure suggests the goblins were "whisked out of the mists of time" thanks to Vangerdahast and already militaristic.
I suppose it's possible their might be an Abeir connection Perhaps the nature of Toril and Abeir's connection is that what is a demiplane bordering the Prime in one world is actually space borrowed from the other?
That said, the goblins of Grodd--wherever they come from--are big specimens of their kind, with no hobgoblins about the place.
I still haven't read the Ecologies texts yet. I hope to find some good info there as I think it would be cool to read about any large, set piece battles between Cormyr's forces and those of organized hobgoblins.
The Realms needs more classic monster nations and city states, if you ask me. |

Strangely, the (goblin) nation the city of Grodd was part of was never really given any detail. It was supposed to exist at some point in Cormyr's past, but it doesn't really fit neatly into any timeline for that nation.*
Now, going by what Brian James just said in another thread, 'Abeir' is technically just another version of Toril - an 'alternate history' Toril. Ergo, the Grodd goblins could have come from the Abeiran geographic location that corresponds to Cormyr on Toril. They were in a pocket-plane... no reason that plane could have drawn Grodd in from 'the other side' (the alternate Toril). I find it an interesting train of thought that pocket planes are basically 'bubbles' that exist in the fabric of the universe, like the kind you get that eventually leads to a blow-out. The fabric of reality gets very thin at that point because its been stretched to fit around the bubble.
Anyhow, I digress. My point is that we don't know enough about whatever civilization those goblins originated from, so it is fairly easy to 'fudge' things and say there was a hobgoblin aristocracy (they were very Roman-Empireque). Since only one small piece of their culture (just one city) made it into the pocket-plane, we are only aware of the goblins that entered Toril via that plane.
*EDIT: Come to think of it, the Grodd Goblins may have actually been part of Hlundadim (in the Goblin Marches). If their leader - Hlundadim - was truly a Netherese Arcanist, then that might explain their culture (instead of 'Roman Empire', it was really a derivative of the Netherese Empire). That is probably the simplest explanation for them.
Just looking at that Realms history - seems they took-down some pretty potent players in the time just before Cormyr (did a search of 'goblin' in tGHotR). I hadn't realized that were that powerful. It specifically says 'goblinkin', not just 'goblins', so we can assume some hobs and bugbears in there. |

Do you have Elminster's Ecologies? There are discussions of hobgoblins in both the Cormyr Marshes and The Stonelands And Goblin Marshes books.

The only information I can offer is the Goblin Marches also have hobgoblins in plenty within them. |
