Hi!,
I posted this to ed as well, but as he is busy, it might take a while to get feedback from him - full yunderstandable
So here to you fellow scribes, have you witnessed any evidance of Female Hobgoblins being warriors in the Hobgoblin tribes in Faerun at all?
Or is this "stanrdard" for the reace or a complete no go?
I for myself have found no evidance of one or theother so far. |

They are known as the Razor Heart clan ruled over by Maquar(?). They reside in The Gap, a mountain range between Damara and Nar. If you enjoy reading about hobgoblins then I would recommend that you read Chosen of Nendawen as they have a prominent part in the plotline. |

There is no "allow," because the elders of any hobgoblin tribe that hasn't been reduced to a handful of individuals by war, disease, or other mishap are at least half female, and usually more (60 percent or so). They discuss and advise any hobgoblin chieftan - - and although that chief (almost always male) has the final word, a chief who scorns, ignores, or disagrees with his elders repeatedly doesn't last long.
Or to put it another way, hobgoblin females decide for themselves if they'll be in the forefront of any fighting, unless the head of their family, or the ranking battle leader, orders otherwise.
Usually, the females keep back, because protecting the children (and hobgoblin children can be quite willful, easily stirred to rage, battle-fury, and pride, and want to join in fighting themselves) and by extension the race is their prime concern, so females more often defend a camp, stronghold, saethren (hospital for the wounded), dwelling, or moving group of the aged and children.
Most groups of hobgoblin elders see such service as more sensible and valuable than front-rank fighting. Whereas the males are seen as more expendable/replaceable, so their proper place is in the front ranks of battle.
So among most hobgoblins, the thinking is not "females are inferior" but rather "females are more valuable to the tribe/clan/family/group in these other roles" (protecting the children, tending the wounded, and defending the food supply and defensible refuges).
Some humans view hobgoblins as brutish beasts, with rutting males being reckless, unthinking nodes of "runaway destruction" - - but then, many hobgoblins view humans as deceitful and far too numerous and pervasive vandals who pry into every corner, and think themselves the rightful owners of everything not nailed down, not to mention every last stretch of ground not claimed by a more formidable human - - or in other words, insane vermin upon the land. :}

Well I agree with all of you sages, as long as there is a large enough population, there for sure willbe female wariors with intelligent races.
But I was looking for some canonical evidence, or some featured female characters even. Does anyone of you happen to have such at hand?
@thauranil, where is this Hobgoblin tribe located, and what is the tribe-name? Wouldbe very interesting to know. |

It is my experience that Hobgoblin females are not front line warriors...but when defending their homes, they will fight as well as a Goblin perhaps (though larger, their combat abilities might be that of a goblin).
I don't see any problem if a Hobgoblin tribe were to have females as warriors as well; but like others, I think it would be much the same as humans in that a lower percentage of females would fight. Because humanoids have many hunter/gatherer skills, I see Hobgoblin females as being capable archers at least...if for no other reason than feeding the young. |

The Chosen of Nendawen series features a large hobgoblin tribe and in this tribe it seemed pretty clear that females were not considered warriors and once their mate was slain had to choose a new one who could then decide either to raise any existing children or abandon them. |

I think the goblinoids (including Hobs and Orcs) are very much like humans in this regard - YES, there are female warriors, but they are the exception, not the rule. Small tribes may have one or two, and larger tribes/clans may even have all-female 'warrior sisterhoods', but once again, its uncommon.
Thats my own take, not anything canon.
Males hunting (& gathering) and females 'taking care of the home/hearth' is hard-coded into nearly all live-birth mammals (and most egg-layers as well), simply because the female has the young, and usually the milk (or provides other forms of feeding). That doesn't mean aberrations don't crop-up in nearly all species (felines are good example of a genus where females do nearly everything and males do very little). Warriors = 'protectors of the herd', which nearly always falls to the males of any species. Females usually only take on this role when young are threatened (so don't piss-off no goblin-mommas!) |

Well 3.5 SRD did not help at all, 2nd Edition Core Rules was not much help either. However I took a look at Goblin, 2nd Edition which indicates only male Goblins are warriors. quote:
In addition to the males, there will be adult females equal to 60% of their number and children equal to the total number of adults in the lair. Neither will fight in battles.
thus it might be fairly safe to infer Hobgoblin, cousin to goblin would have same type of configuration. That is the females and children are not warriors. |
