Can he die? As I understand it he and his layer of the Abyss are bound to Faerun by the actions of the original summoners and the binding placed upon him in the citatdel of conjurors. Does this meaa that he cannot be slain until this binding is undone, or does it mean that should he die he loses his powers as a Demon Prince and his layer and therefore the demoncyst revert to original state but within Faerun as opposed to the Abyss and the untold destruction that would bring about mean that those in the past that have opposed Eltab refrained from doing so?
One other question keeps springing to mind is what effects has the termination of magic had on the bindings of various demons etc.
I am think of the actions of Karsus and the Spellplague. Is it that the bindings draw on a backup supply of magic that bypasses the weave? |

It's been a long while since I've read it, but didn't Eltab's entry in Champions of Ruin cover this possibility?

Eltab has spent so much time (many centuries) imprisoned within the ancient city-glyph of Eltab of Old Thay that I would suggest he could almost be viewed as "native" to Faerūn instead of to the Abyssal-wherever. In short - there might be enough "essence of Eltab" imprinted in Thay that truly destroying the fiend could require a deliberate effort across multiple "home" planes (Prime/Faerūn being one of these). Blasting Eltab in his lower planar home might diminish him greatly but Eltab (or at least part of Eltab) might then undergo the usual immortal-planar-regenesis thing in the next best place the cosmos offers which is "attuned" to his essence.
Y'know, "like attracts like", "once together, always together" - the usual occult mumbo-jumbo. Whether Eltab can be permanently destroyed is really a question of how powerful he is in the cosmic order of things (which is ill-defined within canon sources). And, of course, Thay being what it is, whether Eltab has some sort of allies (or would-be masters) working within the ranks of the Red Wizards or gods or enemies of Thay. |

As to the bindings drawing on the weave, I'd say they were cast using more "basic" magics/rituals. For instance, I don't know that epic magic was necessarily impacted by the spellplague. I differentiate here between epic magic and things like 10th-12th lvl spells.
As to Eltab being able to be destroyed. I can definitely be wrong, but I believe he has to be destroyed within his home plane (so either in a demoncyst or where the special bindings that tie him to the plane were placed). Killing him on Toril should send him back to his "home plane"..... which would actually be interesting given its all intermixed with ours... but still possible. |

I have always assumed so. Otherwise, a lot of bindings and such would have failed in -339. Since we know that wasn't the case, then either the bindings include a sort of magical UPS, or those bound were in a form of stasis and weren't able to wake up and get out before the binding was reasserted. The former is, I think, the less problematic approach. |
