I've been revising my compilation of beholder names to create an updated EBoN name-generating chapter file. I'm up to 118 seed names, both from Realms sources and others using the same style, but would like to appeal to you all for further ones from sources I may lack. In particular from:
-- 3E- and 4E-era Realms novels (except Alanxan, Tharxul)
-- computer games (except Dexam, Arcam, Xoham, Xantam)
-- Spelljammer sourcebooks
-- 2E non-Realms game books and articles (except I, Tyrant, Eye of Pain)
-- 3E and 4E non-Realms game books and articles (except Lords of Madness, Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk)
And if you're a published Realms author, any new beholder names would also be appreciated!

I'm a fan of Lestch'cymatium, but that's because I created him. He is (or was, hard to say with timeline) a beholder mage at war with the dragon Nartheling over Umbergoth.

Arglath - one of refugees from Ooltul who tried to conquer the Twisted Tower when Elminster was already in charge in that area.

Eye eye. I just need a couple of people to test this now.
TBeholder Posted - 27 Aug 2012 : 03:59:18
Xantriph (Manxam's predecessor Manshoon met first in the Temple in the Sky); Xulla (Xantriph's successor as the Voice of Bane); Ithaqull, Quyssztellan, Arglath, Xualahuu (others working with Manshoon); Zantiid (Zhent ally in High Moors); Orox(worked with High Inquisitor Ginali of Bane); Uluae (youngster working with Buorstag Hlammythyl);
Uthh (killed by Xanathar); Kirukeskai "the Eye" (elder orb who killed Xanathar); Seirtych Xantaun (killed by "the Eye"); Misker ("the pirate-tyrant");
Rilathdool (ruler of Dakspar), Xaran (infected by Moander in "Song Of The Saurials").
If you're interested in beholder-kin too, Thoim Zalamm (spectator, The Misty Beard Tavern, Waterdeep).

From reading the Wiki, it appears they made the 5th dimension folk something akin to genies. In a weird way they are more like Marvel's cosmic cube beings. Their reality-altering powers are a bit too epic for normal D&D - they are akin to Star Trek's 'Q'. Not sure where'd they even fit into the cosmology (aberrations?)

I like the idea of them coming from the same dimension as the beholders, but I can't think of a good reason why (in other words, a cool way to spin it). Maybe Beholders were created on a whim by them?

If I was still running GH, I'd be tempted to create a prankster beholder named Mr. Mxyzptlk, or even a 'bat mite' like annoying mascot for the PCs.

Well, if we go by some of the odd-gender dynamics embedded in interpretations of DC's 5th dimension, then it's entirely possible that Mister Mxyzptlk takes the form of the Great Mother when he interacts with the four dimensions of D&D space.

That huge beholder in Zhentil Keep featured in Crown of Fire must have a name. Forgot it, though; and I'm kinda lazy to do even a little research.

That full name of Xanathar is new, far as I know. Yup, have Xaejil from the Explorer’s Handbook. Can I have a source for Zal, please?

Please PM me if you're interested in testing the beholder name-generating file, if you have a PC and especially if you haven't used EBoN before.

Zal

Zal the Destroyer from the plane of Vacuum

Dennis Posted - 24 Aug 2012 : 08:29:48

D&D, but not FR. If it's not mentioned yet:

Xaejil - a beholder who uses dragonshards to lure adventurers into his lair deep within the Khyber.
Jeremy Grenemyer Posted - 24 Aug 2012 : 07:22:31
Ed Greenwood's latest Eye on the Realms article (Dragon #414) lists:

Xandulzrithral--the full name of Xanathar. (Not sure if the full name was ever in print, so I thought I'd include it here.)

Xlorothxrau--he's the boss in Waterdeep now, it seems. Also called Lothjaws.

Oooo! I've a partial listing of several officially listed mind flayer names from various sources -- including the Realms.

If and when you move forward with this, Faraer, let me know. I'd like to contribute.

I have Vaxall (from Lands of Intrigue) and Xavlal noted from "Sleep of Ages" -- did I miss some?

The spawn of my 227 amassed beholder names should be appearing in the next Candlekeep.com update. I think mind flayers are next. Thanks again.

Many Eyes was the beholder upon whose corpse Menzoberranzan was founded.

I know, it hardly sounds original alongside these other great names.
ericlboyd Posted - 28 May 2012 : 20:42:11
There's one on near-to-the last page of FA1 - Halls of the High King. It's an unusual one, which should help significantly.

There are a lot of names in Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark.

I just found a couple beholder names in Bury Elminster Deep, page 230: Xarlandralath, spawn of Xorlughra.
Jeremy Grenemyer Posted - 13 Feb 2012 : 05:09:03
Ed's Eye on the Realms in Dungeon #178 talks about a beholder named Harhoarguh Manyeyes.
Faraer Posted - 11 Feb 2012 : 13:52:32
You can find the original and fullest write-up of the beholder mage in Allen Varney's SJA1 Wildspace, which yielded up a few names to my Aixlintar-to-Zythalarlr list.

That, too, but frequently it happens another way around, i.e. a beholder gets injured and tries to get at least something from the bad situation. Regeneration isn't widely accessible magic, after all.

It's closeable, but canonically they should be blind on it. Of course, there's no problem with using innate eyebeams on anything not currently in the active antimagic cone. Elder Orbs don't have this predicament either, but they cast internally, not by using spellstalks. This seems to be a specific incompatibility between the central eye and beholder-mage tricks.
IMHO a beholder-mage who somehow got its central eye regenerated (again, good luck with that) still can use already all transformed eyestalks the way they became, but can't transform new or change existing spellstalks and thus can't advance as a beholder mage either.

I only just came across this scroll, Faraer. Sorry.

I'll check my archives later this afternoon.
Faraer Posted - 11 Feb 2012 : 04:21:19
Yes, it was that article that prompted this latest name-trawl. Anyone with more stashed away in secret or staringly obvious nooks?
Jeremy Grenemyer Posted - 08 Feb 2012 : 22:22:38
For Xraunrarr Shall Triumph in Dragon #406, there's Xraunrarr, founder of a fellowship of beholders. Also Uldeeth the Traitor Tyrant and Xargaul.
Faraer Posted - 08 Feb 2012 : 20:51:54
Thank you, all. I'm open to anyone's names if they fill a gap -- I've used AJA's in EBoN chapters in the past. Shatevar also led me to Kanabar in the same book. DDGttU: 'Beholder mages are younger orbs who have forgone the powers of their central eye to cast wizard spells.' Naturally, I already have Fred.

*sighs* after last name request I had to answer this one.
