They removed so many interesting locations, Calimshan is now ruled by elementals and everyone is enslaved, Thay is now ruled by masses of Undead and everyone else is a slave or worse, Lantan was sunk I think? Mulhorand.. Gone.

I don't even know where to host a city adventure except in stereotypical Waterdeep anymore. Where do you have those level 1 heros start and what large cities are even left?

I liked all the different flavors from the cities I mentioned, Thay was a dictatorship type area, Calimshan was a anything goes world ruled by self proclaimed pasha's with guilds, Lantan was Lantan. All these areas now are useless.

Is there something I am missing?

The thing I am worried about with Luskan is that it feels like just building ruins with no trade or functional inns and taverns, Just people running around charging tolls on bridges and living in tents and old buildings.

If Luskan is just a really dangerous city but with still a type of functional government (no matter how corrupt or abusive) then that is really exciting. Are there still taverns and semi regular locations or is it so dangerous these days that there is no point?

So many questions, I can't wait to read this book. (nice shameless plug of the other two books as well. Jk!)

EDIT:

As for what is stopping me from Calimport, from what I read in the 4e book, it looks like every human in the city is now basically considered a slave to the higher beings of elementals, how can I have a relaxing romp through that city where the players are considered welcomed to trade goods and enjoy the finer things when they are basically enslaved the minute they step foot into Calimport, How did the elementals even take over an entire city that large?

What's stopping you doing Calimshan/Calimport, exactly? I mean, there isn't a whole lot of detail on it in the FRCG--you should flesh it out with whatever hierarchy and culture you want.

Also VERY excited about that book on Luskan which is another favorite, I had thought the city was basically a cess pool now with all the inner conflict going on. Good to see this is still a city with some type of future.
Well, it is pretty much a cesspool, but yes, it is still a city in name and fact.

If you think of a combination of Batman: No Man's Land and Gangs of New York, you have basically the atmosphere I envision for Shadowbane.

Thank you sir, I intend to.

Shadowbane (2011) will actually be my fourth FR novel: Ghostwalker and Downshadow are my other two.

Cheers

Lots of great suggestions there. I would love a really Desert Calimshan themed city.

You know the type of location that has like burning incense and slave markets and rich elegant upper homes with like a huge jump to the lower peasantry. Westgate is close with those merchant cartels then the rest of the city being really poor and all manner of weird things living in the city.

But ultimately I like that whole arabic desert nomad society, with the genie lamps ect. Also VERY excited about that book on Luskan which is another favorite, I had thought the city was basically a cess pool now with all the inner conflict going on. Good to see this is still a city with some type of future.

My current FR campaign is in Waterdeep and we're doing quite well there, but if you want to go to other cities, there are many, many options, including several of my go-to locales:

* Westgate: like Waterdeep but way more corrupt, my personal favorite.

* Airspur: genasi-run, fantastic city (articles on DDI by Matt James, Brian Cortijo, and others).

* Suzail: medieval intrigue and war wizards galore.

* Selgaunt/Sembian cities: extremely shady, what with Netheril and all.

* Luskan: devastating sinkhole of a place, run by gangs, totally awesome. (Though I'm biased, as that's the site of my next realms novel--Shadowbane, Fall 2011.)

* Neverwinter: well, I guess the NWCG would tell you about that, and that's not coming for a year or so. Or you can just fill it in yourself!

*Ikemmu: Shadar-kai city in the underdark, site of Jaleigh's excellent Unbroken Chain novel.

*Baldur's Gate, Athkatla, Silverymoon, etc., etc., lots of great options!

Cheers
