Posted - 30 Apr 2010 : 20:01:33 What's the deal with the two cities on the Great Rift? The maps in the first two edition campaign settings and the Atlas have Earthart to the North and Kholtar at the point where the two main roads meet, but FR10 - Old Empires and the 3rd Edition sourcebook have them the other way round.
What's going on there? And has this already been picked up on? |

Posted - 01 May 2010 : 16:23:25 I just checked my last 'complete' version, and realized that part of the reason I started a newer map was because I was unhappy with that region in particular. It changed the most between editions.
Technically, the most accurate map would be the one in 3e's Shining South.
There was a series of articles written by Ed, and IIRC it high-lighted Earthfast - I remember something about four well-described gates. Since the WotC site got butchered I can't find anything, but I have a sneaking suspicion all of that was moved to the 'paid' section of the site - if so, anyone who has a subscription might be willing to check.
Regardless, my maps reflect the 3e placement, and I had consulted those articles, so I'm pretty sure the 3e placement is the correct one. I think I saved all the old FR articles from their site, so I will continue to hunt for it.
EDIT: Found it - the old links still work lol - http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/archfr/es
It was 3 gates, and it was about Kholtar, not earthfast, but either way the proper placement should be reflected by reading through those
EDIT2: Found the pertinent passage at the bottom of this page - http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=fr/fx20020918es
Since the traveler is heading from Delzimmer to Kholtar, the suggestion to camp outside Earthfast's walls enroute varifies that Earthfast is indeed the more southern locale according to Ed himself. |

Posted - 01 May 2010 : 08:56:54 I would go with the Fonstad Atlas version, that's probably the most accurate map-source for the Realms. The one in FR10 is probably just a mistake. And the changes that were done to the 3ed. maps where done for various reasons and often not to correct mistakes done in earlier products.
But now that I look at it, it seems like FR11 Dwarves Deep also has Eartheart to the south. Maybe this one should go to Ed, so that we can hear what the original placement of the settlements were. |

Posted - 30 Apr 2010 : 20:58:54 By "modified" I guess you mean the FR10 map got it wrong, and 3E followed that rather than the correct version? |

Posted - 30 Apr 2010 : 20:55:47 The map was 'modified' during the transition to 3E. |
