Hello Sages of the Realm!

I am new to this forum, though I am not new to the Forgotten Realms or Dungeons & Dragons :-) Just a quick HELLO! here, if you have questions about me, ask :-D

My question to you is about low-level paladins in Cormyr: would they be allowed to wear weapons, especially if that paladin is on his quest for the church to end his education? How would commoners respond to such a character? Would they figure out that he is a paladin?

Many thanks for your help!

Another question, though a bit off topic.
The adventurer charter just allows characters to go on an adventure trip in Cormyr and is not needed to bear weapons, since everyone is allowed to do so when the weapons are peace-bonded, right?

Many thanks, Brace and all of you. I think I know how to handle my group now in Cormyr. The paladin will get some more respect while I will add an encounter with the Purple Dragon Knights and the rest of the group.

I believe a paladin, particularly, would act in full accord with Cormyr's law. So, while within Cormyr's population centers, they would most certainly bind their weapons with peace-strings. IMC, YMMV, adventurerers rarely travel about population centers in full "adventuring kit".

On that note, and I'm sure the answer is probably already around here (I'm new as well), I was curious as to how the purple dragons/War Wizards deal with clubs, quarterstaves, and ranged weapons, as I would imagine those would be difficult to peace bond. Thanks!

I know that Volo's Guide to Cormyr covers this somewhat, and I think it mentions that if a person is of noble birth and Cormyrian, then he or she can carry a weapon at their side freely, however it's been some time since I last looked that over. If I'm misquoting that, please let me know.

As for the common populace, I believe that Cleric Generic covered it very well. However, once a person was truly identified as such a person, I think that the people would how him respect and treat him very well, especially if he and his group had involved themselves in aiding the commoners in some way, such as freeing them from a goblin raid, bandits, and the like. My own character Joran Nobleheart is a paladin from Cormyr, but when I first started playing him long ago, it was near Waterdeep. It took me quite a while to make it back to Cormyr as I remember. I do think that I was allowed to bear arms, though most of my party wasn't allowed to do so unless they were peace bonded as was mentioned earlier. I hope that helps you some, my friend!

I thought there were a lot of exceptions to the rule, but if you're adventurers without a charter, I'm willing to bet that the rule would be enforced pretty quickly while you were 'in-town'.

The bonds probably also have minor magics on them to prevent sly adventurers from using magics to bypass breaking the bond.

From Ed:-

Please also remember: the Swords need not use peacestrings because of the conditions of their charter, no Purple Dragon, War Wizard, Obarskyr, King’s Lord, or herald need use them, no “badged” forester need use peacestrings when in the King’s Forest (includes on any road within the forest, though settled areas are excepted), and no nobles need use them when in walled parts of their own lands (i.e. their mansions) or when hunting; their servants need only use them if the noble orders them to. So there are a LOT of exceptions, and everyone in the realm is allowed a “belt knife” (short-bladed eating knife, though certain dagger designs, such as stilleto types, will earn you arrest right away, because Purple Dragons deem them to have only a killing-another-person use) exception. If you glance at SWORDS OF EVENINGSTAR closely, you’ll see that a great amount of the book actually involves places, situations, or characters that fall under the exceptions.
There's a few more relevant tidbits scattered throughout his replies from over the years as well. And from Brian "Garen Thal" Cortijo also. Just sift through the "So Saith Ed" archive [see the link in my signature] for further details.

Welcome to the keep!

There's a vast amount of lore concerning Cormyr scattered about the keep, and I'm sure there's a highly detailed answer to your questions buried somewhere in Ed's questions on the Chamber of Sages shelf.

I think the right to bear arms is fairly widespread in Cormyr, and I would imagine that even a trainee paladin would routinely carry full arms even on a training quest. As for being identified as a paladin, if he/she/it is carrying an obvious badge of office and otherwise appear to be the real deal then the response would be largely favourable among the general populace. Those who have something to hide, on the other hand, may not be so welcoming of a meddling crusader... I doubt simply announcing that you're a paladin would be sufficient to convince most people, so some demonstration of power or official sanction might be required before special consideration is given.
