I require citations and/or confirmations of the following 'Realmspeak':
  • Again” – common:- a hostile or sarcastic, angry greeting

  • Alavairthae!” – common:- a parting used by the Red Wizards of Thay, meaning: “May your skill prevail!”

  • Aluve” – drow:- a parting used by drow, meaning: “I/we leave you”

  • Amarast!” – common:- a parting used by sailors of the South, meaning: “Farewell until next we meet!”

  • Axe high, friend. I go” – common:- a parting used by dwarves

  • Battered dwarf weather” – common:- a human term for violent electrical storms, hurricane winds, and avalanches

  • Braeunk vhos trolkh!” – goblin:- a parting used by hobgoblins, meaning: “If you die while I’m gone, do it quietly!” (with the unspoken addendum: “Because I wouldn’t want to miss the fun.”)

  • Clack” – common:- gossip; the current “hot topics” of everyday local conversation

  • Filidar” – common:- dainty food; a feast or picnic (as in: “a fine filidar it was, too,” after a gluttonous prince of long-ago Turmish, Filidar the Fat, also known as Filidar the Fool and Filidar the Fop)

  • Forges warm, friend” – common:- a parting used by gnomes

  • Gods smile [upon you]!” – common:- a parting used by halflings when speaking to non-halflings

  • Good morning, and good day after that! Don’t let anything curl your hair!” – common:- (to which is sometimes added: “Ware the Big Folk, and mind the goblins too!”) a parting used by halflings when speaking to each other

  • Lay down coin” – common:- pay for something

  • Lay down good coin” – common:- pay a lot for something

  • Short name” – common:- shortened version of a name, used as a nickname

  • Soul-forging weather” – common:- a dwarven term for violent electrical storms, hurricane winds, and avalanches

  • Strongarm” – common:- a mercenary

  • Until next, may your sword be ever wet, and your bottom dry” – common:- a parting used by the pirates of the Inner Sea

  • Until Swords part” – common:- a parting used by warriors throughout the Realms

  • Vendui” – drow:- a greeting used by drow

  • Well again” – common:- a greeting between friends, or people that have already met

  • My web searching points to them being in the OGB, but since I don't own one myself, could some scribes that do, have a quick look if any of the above terms or phrases are in it. If so, could I get quotations and proper source citations for those that are?

Well, I still have about 50 or so in my "TODO" list, so some may actually overlap with what you allude to. Besides, when the time comes, you (among others) will receive some annoying PMs to contribute. That will be the last step once I'm through my list of sources to read through (the remaining source books I've not yet finished searching through, online WotC articles, all the So saith Ed articles, and so on). A medium term, but very worthy project, so I don't mind the leg work.

Well, not to dishearten you, but there are at least another 100 Reamsian names and phrases not included in your master list. Keep at it, because you're way more organised than me in sorting them out!

So ammended, and also why I am reliant on, and thankful to other scribes. I only have (largely) 3.0 and 3.5 Realms books, together with the freely downloadable (older) ones from WotC. That means I have terms and phrases in the list that I cannot verify, due to not having the original sources on hand. My thanks, George, as some you have cited weren't even posted above, but are in the "TODO" category of my master list.

I can see why that would fix that day in your memory. My condolences, and thanks for sharing. It's one of the great things about fiction; it helps us keep going.

Yes, I'm a graying gal. Sigh.
And yes, our PCs' first encounter with a Druuth "out hunting" cost three PCs their lives, wounded us all, and we burned a permanent magic item (deliberately causing it to explode by hurling a particular spell at it) to take them out.
However, that wasn't what traumatized me that day. It was arriving home that evening to discover three friends had just been killed in a car crash and the police wanted me to come and identify the burned bodies that fixed that particular day in my mind.
Heh. To try to calm down once I got home, I phoned Ed and had him read me a Realms story. He very sweetly did, for about an hour, and then we talked until I was falling asleep on the line.
I was young, back then (sorry, Hoondatha), and that was several hundred corpse identifications ago. Double sigh.
That's the great thing about the Realms; it exists in our minds, and so can survive, on and on down the years, even after mind after mind goes dark.
    love,
    THO

    Wow.

    1) That you can remember that clearly (or is it because they tramatised you that badly?)

    2) Druuth are as old as I am.
    The Hooded One Posted - 18 Mar 2010 : 14:42:36
"Druuth" (the name and the concept) were first set down in Ed's unpublished (part of his original 1986 Realms turnover) "power groups of the Realms" notes, that were used for many projects. I believe the POLY mentions (Ed's writing) were the first print appearances of them. I THINK Ed came up with the name and concept one sunny Sunday afternoon in 1982, just before a Realmsplay session; he mentioned them to me after the session, that evening.

Druuth is also found in DD's Guide to the Underdark, among others. No idea where it started, however.

I'll check on which book the sidebar is in when I get home. I think it's the Cyclopedia, but I'll double check.

"Clack" - a Dalelands word meaning gossip or the major topics of the day's talk - Polyhedron #54: The Everwinking Eye: Elminster's Guide to the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting.

    And from that same article:

"Under the tongue" - common - Realms term for "the topic at hand".

    From Polyhedron#71:

"Battered dwarf weather" - vilent electrical storms, hurricane winds, and avalanches (human expression)

"Before all the gods" - I swear to you (emphatic, imploring: implies strong emotion)

"Dance, all!" - Let the battle/contest/argument/duel begin

"Filidar" - dainty food, a feast or picnic (as in "a fine filidar it was too ...", after a gluttonous prince of long-ago Turmish, Filidar the Fat, also known as Filidar the Fool and Filidar the Fop).

"Lay down coin" - pay for something, in any form of currency

"Lay down good coin" - pay a lot for something, in any form of currency

"Soul-forging weather" - violent electrical storms, hurricane winds and avalanches (dwarven expression).

    "Strongarms", "Hireswords" - mercenaries

"Swords out" - 1. Arm yourselves, dange (as a warning) 2. A fight or armed brawl, an angry dispute (as a noun or descriptive phrase, as in: "It was a good swords out the lads had that night").

"Well enough" - fine with me, I accept, that'll do

Oh, and where you have written "Some sources site Polyhedron#74", those terms are indeed in that magazine issue.

Here are a few more, just for fun:

    "A proper Moonhunt Down" - a hard-fought battle or sorcerous spell-duel (Polyhedron#106).

"Vilhonese" or "Vilhonna" - folk of the Vilhon Reach (Polyhedron#109)

"Dapplans" - townfolk of Dapplegate in the Border Kingdoms (Polyhedron#117)

"Druuth" - common - a term for small groups of dopplegangers led by mindflayers. These groups are common in the lands south of the Shaar and the Dustwall, though still rare elsewhere (Polyhedron#127).

    Hoondatha,

    Firstly: Thank you very much!

Secondly: Is that sidebar in the Cyclopedia of the Realms or the DM's Sourcebook of the Realms? Also am I right in saying both were by Ed Greenwood and Jeff Grubb?

I have the OGB as a text-searchable pdf, so I went looking for your terms. Unfortunately, aside from a sidebar on page 9 with greetings and farewells, I couldn't find any of them. Looks like a number of the terms below were mis-attributed to the OGB. A few, like the two weather ones, I've never even heard of, so have no idea where they might be.

Only "Well again" had more information in its description than you had in yours, for the others you have them well covered. Hope this helps.
