How do the elves in the Realms measure the passing of time? Is there a DR to Elven Calendar conversion?
I'm aware of the usage of "First Rysar of Uvaeren" (occurred in -8200 DR), in that they measure time by Epochs. So how would an elf write a date in -8140 DR?
"In the sixtieth year of the First Rysar"?
The Epoch measurement of time is a regional measurement, as my example only speaks of Uvaeren an ancient and fallen elven realm, right?

The length of elven ears depends on the artist and setting. For some, elven ears are the same as human ears, just pointed. For others, elven ears have to reach somewhere between 3 and 12 inches over their head, though what function this serves is beyond me...
Oh, wait, years, not ears! My bad! I were confused, for a second.

Rystall Wood's founding appears to be in DR -8800 according to multiple sources, if that's what you're looking for.

That's right!! Elves do not measure by years, but leap years! Thank you so much for bringing that to this scroll!! =)
I searched through the FR timeline, and came up with a list of years that Rysar ruled (start and end dates). They all center around Arcorar, which actually works great for me.
I wish there was a good way to post tables, I'd post it here.
I do have a hole in the timeline. When was Rystar Woods founded? |

IIRC, the term "Rysar" refers to the length of the reign of the coronal at the time. So it's not a fixed-length timespan. Your guess for how specific years were referred to sounds good to me; I think that generally elves measured smaller units of time as those from one Cinnaelos'Cor (the leap-year holiday in the Realms, every four years, known as Shieldmeet to humans) to the next. It makes more sense to me for a race as long-lived as the elves to use multi-year units of time measurement. Hopefully other scribes can add some more detail to this; I'm away from all of my sources right now. |
