Posted - 28 Jul 2008 : 11:46:14 A goddess that has not gotten the attention she deserves in official lore, poor Waukeen is still only a Lesser Goddess despite trade being the lifeblood of many of Faerun's most powerful lands. Her temples provide many forms of services to people of any religion and trade in areas where they hold sway is easier, more convenient and more profitable.
After Waukeen's return, her clergy will undoubtedly step up their aggressive efforts to become a part of the daily lives of Faerunians. This will perhaps mean that they will become more active as bankers, moneylenders, moneychangers and financial advisors.
As such, it is important to me to know how many places in Faerun have a full-fledged temple to Waukeen. Where are those temples? How many places have shrines with a full-time priest in attendance?
These are the temples I've been able to find. Does anyone know of canon references to other Waukeenar temples or shrines? Even if there is no name mentioned, just the fact that there is a temple or shrine somehwere?
Gilt House of Gleaming Coins (Sheirtalar, Lapaliiya) Goldhall of the Sacraments (Urmlaspyr, Sembia) Goldspires (Athhatla, Amn) Highwater Hall (Highwater, ?) House of Fair Trade (Nesme, Silver Marches) Khanduq of the Coinmother (Calimport, Calimshan) The Cascade of Coins (Innarlith, Lake of Steam) The Coinchapel (Calimport, Calimshan) The Hall of Diamonds (Yhaunn, Sembia) The Hall of Success (Procampur, The Vast) The House Built of Gold (Mulmaster, Moonsea) The House of Coins (Elversult, The Dragon Coast) The Lodge of Coins (Riatavin, Amn/Tethyr/Independent) The Tower of Gold (Iriaebor, Heartlands) The Tower of Riches (Ordulin, Sembia) The Wall of Coins (Suldolphor, Calimshan) Temple of the Lady of Coins (Phent, Thesk) Waukeen’s Circle: holy site/shrine (Trademeet, Amn) Unnamed Large Temple (Reth, Chondath/Chessenta/Independent) Unnamed shrine (Marsember, Cormyr)
In addition, there's sure to be a temple in Raven's Bluff (the faith has a seat on the Clerical Circle there). Evidence also suggests that there are 'temples' to Waukeen in the Vast (CoRB).
I'm also sure that Chondath has more than a few temples to the Merchant's Friend. The Scions of Arrabar series must have mentioned some, though I can't find my copies just now (and couldn't find the first book at all). |

But I couldn't even find a placement.
Poor Waukeen was lost in the Abyss for so long that many 2e sourcebooks ignored the goddess and any possible temples to her.
I noticed that she wasn't even among the gods listed for the Vilhon Reach supplement in 2e, for example, even though Chondath is clearly fertile ground for her and she's listed among the gods there in the 3e FRCS.
I'd dearly like to know what cities in Chondath and the Reach have a full sized temple to her and what cities have shrines. Since my PCs are allied with the temple in Raven's Bluff and use Waukeenar clergy to move their wealth around, they'll only want to trade in cities with a temple or a shrine active enough to support their business.
I was glad to find a note in Old Empires that Reth had a large temple to Waukeen. That's a load off my mind, since I had already ruled that it did. I guess the temple isn't detailed anywhere, so I can put my own NPCs there. It's also unnamed, of course. |

Sounds like a great idea. Good luck with it! |

Posted - 29 Jul 2008 : 03:34:29 I'll double-check the listing when I get home later today... just to be sure. I know I've still got a few sourcebooks and novels to reference yet, so I shouldn't be too long* with it.
* Taking into account how long it usually takes for me to complete anything for Candlekeep, of course. |

Since this reminded me... I'm nearly done with the update. Though, I don't specifically recall whether any new temples to Waukeen were uncovered in my research through the more recent Realmslore.
I'll await the list with furious anticipation.
Odds are that the temple in Raven's Bluff hasn't been named, but it's canonical that Lady Lauren DeVillars is establishing one again.
Westgate also appears like a candidate for a temple. |

I can't remember the name of the temple either. Maybe go ask Thomas over in his thread? :)
Oh, aye, I'll head over to ask. |

You were quite right about the second one. I added it to the list after your suggestion.
Now I only have to update the list with all the new sources. There is canonically a temple to Waukeen in Arrabar, and I can even find the name of most of the clergy in books II and III of the Scions of Arrabar, but I find no name mentioned for the temple itself! It's always refered to just as 'The Temple' or 'The Temple of Waukeen'. It is terribly vexing.

That's a fair observation, I think.
Who knows, maybe her status changed for 4E. Of course, it might not necessarily have changed for the better.

And I think Waukeen will be a larger and larger part of that future, since I'm seeing endless possibilities for her clergy. Banks, moneylenders, financial advisors, contract guarantors, etc. And all bringing in money and worshippers for them.
If a merchant who worships Waukeen can deposit a sum in one temple and withdraw it from another by presenting a Letter of Credit, trade takes a giant leap forward. If he can do it by means of spells cast by the clergy and doesn't have to travel, trade takes another giant leap. And no merchant can prosper without worshipping Waukeen, which means that Waukeen takes a giant leap forward.
Exciting times ahead for the Waukeenar! |

What was the newest Realms reference for it, though? Presumably, the Scions of Arrabar series includes new temples in Chondath. There was a corrupt priest of Waukeen as the villain and the protagonist belonged to a religious mercenary group in Waukeen's service.
Too bad I couldn't find the first book in the series, since the other two mostly happen away from Arrabar. |
