Posted - 28 May 2008 : 05:52:13 Our current Realms campaign is stalling, we're around 17 and 2 of the 5 of us haven't been able to make the last bunch of games with any reliability. So we're going to give 4E rules a try in the 3.5 timeline and just say "this is how magic has always worked" when everyone isn't there.
I'm going to DM since I've got the most experience with 4e.. demos and played through H1. But I got hit with a doosie of a question and don't know how to answer because if it's generally outside of my range of gameplay for the Realms. I have a player that wants to be a "princess" of her tribe that was take on a slave raid and sold into slavery.
My dilemma is.. she asked me where would said princess could come from. I suggest Chult because she wants to make the character black but I'm not sure if that's a good place of origin.
Anyone have any other suggestions or places idea for such a background? We're not going to actually start this for a few weeks, but now that the 4e are floating around and we all have digital copies of them.. well might be sooner. :) |

Good stuff then. I was just unsure of Chult being an area that slavers raid or tribes selling captives to slavers.
Thanks for the info Markustay. :) |

Posted - 28 May 2008 : 15:47:26 Yes, as Rino says, slavers are EVERYWHERE in the Realms (and can even come up beneath you!) Chult is definately the most obvious choice. If you reference my Chult map, you will note there is a city called Ishau that has little or no canon lore (unlike Mezro), so you can do whatever you like with it.
Perhaps some day Alaundo will move some of those newer maps to this site (and fix the link to the Erlkazar one - its still going to the older version).
Turmish doesn't have any slave traditions, IIRC, but some of the surrounding countries do I believe, such as Chondath and Chessenta (I think Chessenta has gladitorial slaves even, if I'm not mistaken). That means that slaves can be easily taken from Turmish by those countries.
There may even be some sort of 'Olympic Games' wherein the loser has to give the winner slaves. I read the Vilhon Reach sourcebook years ago, and I'm not near any sources, so I can't check that, unfortuneately.
Since you're using the 1e/2e/3e world, you can also say she is a princess from southern Maztica (where nearly every country was really a Citystate), or even further south from Katashaka. In either case, they could have been brought to Faerūn by unscrupulous Amnish slavers.
Lastly, the people of Zakhara are dark-skinned. Their features are more 'caucasian', but the skin can be extremely dark amongst those desert tribes, and any one of those can have a princess.
For something REALLY different - have her be a Drow princess from some unheard of realm - one based on a Monarchy, rather then a Lolth-based Theocracey. If she's from far away, like Kara-Tur or Anchorme, she may not even understand why people fear and hate her. I so love little twists like that in my games. I good region for her to be from would be Akota (on the far eastern edge of Zakhara).
I'm not mentioioning Malatra (southern K-T) because even though they also have fairly dark skin, the culture and facial features are probably not what you are looking for.
Shameless Plug: If you refer to my CKC9 article, you can even have her be a princess from the Punjabbi Islands - the Wakaloni Islands are especially apt for this ( I picture the people there being 'Hawaiin' Half-Elves, but you can make up whatever you want - they're non-canon). |

Turmish is a republic.

As for sources of slaves? Slaves can ultimately be from anywhere. Even in places where slavery is illegal, there will be slavers and they are fairly standard fantasy villains (you know, the type that pick urchins off the streets to sell into slavery). |

You might also find some data about the political habits of these people. |
