I've never bothered using design software peferring terrain or paper in my games but this is tempting me, really tempting!

Has anyone used previous incarnations of this? What's it like to use?

You'd be surprised at how much CC is used in the amateur world and by DMs all around to draw there map. Professionnal artists how draw for Paizo and WotC use combination of hand drawn sketches, photoshop and illustrator type tool to make their maps.

CC is very much an aid to the DM who considers maps a fun part of the creation process. I don't consider 4 hours to learn a software a very long learning curve by the way. I've been using it for maybe 13 years and i haven't found a better aid to make maps the fun and easy way.

But this was not an announcement to critic the thing, just to let the people who like it know. Thats about it for me on the subject.

Have fun mapping.

This is the kind of stuff Paizo or WotC staff would use to create published products and stuff... not a DM tool... (have CC2, the one that came with the 2E core rules, and I remember going through a 4 hour tutorial to learn how to use the thing... it was a bear to use; not practical at all for everyday DM needs...)

If it's anything like CC1, it's a pain just to learn how to use it....at least it was for me...which is why I gave it up

It's going to be for me, as soon as I find a projector. Dundjinni and the tabletop. An absolutely beautiful combination. The possibilities are immense. I can't wait.

Hi there,

I know this post is a bit old but i thought to share my first map with DD3. I've used DD2 before but the new versions is very far ahead of it's predecessor. Here is what i could whip up in an hour or so.

This map is the first level of the Tower of Bones that is featured in the Pool of Radiance module from 2001.

First - you *need* CC3 in order to use DD3. CC3 (like previous incarnations) is essentially a *CAD* program. As such, it is infinitely more powerful and flexible than a tile-based program (such as Dundjinni). It also happens to be much more difficult to use and is much more time-consuming in use. The biggest things to understand about CC3 is that it is vector-based and you can draw using vector commands (e.g. you can tell it to draw stuff using relative or absolute coordinates - "x,y" or "r,</", etc.) Another *big* difference from traditional drawing programs is that it uses layers - all roads can be on a "Road" layer while all of the rivers and streams can be drawn on a "Water" layer. You can then tell the program in which order to layer things so that you can get nice effects. CC allows you to create your own layers and is flexible enough to generate maps that look any way you want.

I currently use CC2-Pro with the DD2 and CD2 addons but am on a Harnic mapping style kick right now. When I know for sure that the Mappa Harnica toolkit will work with CC3, then I'll upgrade.

If you have the time and are willing to learn, CC3 with the DD3/CD3 addons is the way to go. If you generally only want gridded battlemaps, Dundjinni is the way to go.
