I've just reached the Werewolves island on Tales of the Sword Coast, and it's hit me, I'm really not enjoying the game with my character so far. I'm playing a conjuror, and have gradually become really bored with her. I've played a fighter before, and found that rather dull too. I'm thinking possibly a thief next. Or maybe a ranger...
But the problem is, I've recently got my hands on BG2. It didn't feel right starting with such high level characters, and I really want to play the trilogy from start, to it's conclusion. Would a thief be able to achieve this? What're your views on the best class for playing the Baldur's Gate Saga?

BG2 isn't hard. Just about any class (though certain combinations are a tad overpowered) will do -- you'll get joinable NPCs who have all the spells and skills your character doesn't have, anyway. Also, you can get strongholds particular to each class.

ahhh hey I would take BG 2 over 1 too but low levels can be fun with action combat or rules based combat that lets you use the rule where you arent dead until you are -10hp. Pool of Radiance was my fave RPG ever and the levels were 1-8. Even lower then BG1. |

I have to agree with all others - just jump into BG2 - heck, that game is 5 years old now - so going back to BG1 is almost archaic. 
Actually, for a really good time, look for the old PC games - Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, and Secret of the Silver Blades. It's where I got one of my first few touches of the Realms.

Ya I agree with the others Bg1 s great but I normaly tell new people to play BG2 first and BG1 second lol do to once you become a Fanatic of BG2 and play 100 times lol then play BG1 for the whole story.
The BG2 is the fun most fully made FR novel come to life by pc that I have ever played do to all the NPC being just so right on the mark with depth of personality and grand sub story plots.
Each char you get to know seems to have a life before you met them and it flows with the game.
O well have fun let us know how ya did

I don't start too often in BG1 anymore; I'd say that any character can bring a good time, as others have; I'm partial to wizards (love me the stronghold on that one), but I've had a great time with a thief and a bard as well.
In BG1, I'd be more apt to play a character that can fight physically, because mages (and thieves, for that matter) tend to get whacked pretty quick, esp if you go to an area on the map that you shouldn't be in.

Agreed. Heck, even BG1 really isn't that hard. Don't listen to people who tell you you "should" play one class over another. You can beat both games with just about any character, as long as you take a full, diverse party and actually try to beat the game.
Bards are a lot of fun. I've gone through BG2 and ToB with a plain vanilla bard, and she became a very reliable character (bards aren't "weak", though the 3E ones might be better).
I would recommend playing through BG1 once if you never have before, only because you get a richer experience by playing through the whole scope of the story. However, BG2 really has the better gameplay, and if you *really* want to just play that game, don't refrain from doing so just because it doesn't "feel right".
