I recently recieved the Baldur's gate Tales of the sword coast set as a present. Having never played the BG games before and hearing how great they were I was ready to try it out.

I'm having some serious problems with this game. Can't get very far before the whole party is wiped out or a good chunk of them die off. I try to leverl the Party up but wandering for monsters to kill has proven more dangerous than the plot events.

Is there something I am doing wrong? Or is this game horridly tough? I tend to use a fighter for the main PC and I take Imoen, Khalid and Jahera with me as well as picking up Minsc.

I really want to play this game so I can try BG II wich has set unlaoded until I get a grip on part 1. Any help would be appreciated.

Indeed the main party is thought to be (If you want to carry the plot in Shadows of Amn:

-Main character
-Minsc
-Khalid
-Imoen
-Jaheira
-Dynaheir

If you want to use this party is interesting, that your main character is a cleric or a wizard, using then Khalid, Jaheira and Minsc as advanced fighters, the starring and Dynaheir using all their magic stuff and Imoen qith long-ranged weapons.

Of course you can kill Dyanheir and use Edwin Odesseiron, it's a wise solutions considering that he's the strongest wizard in the game, and remember, magic is always the solution.

I prefer "Sword Coast Keeper" it seems to work better with ToTSC especially if you have other mods installed like DSoTSC.

I agree 100% with you on TUTU+BG1NPC, it is great.I played through once but only had Indria and Mulgore/Xavia pcs in my group at the time.I am playing BGT/BP/NEJ with DSoSC,Bonehill,CTB4BGT-BP,DD,SoS,FR&ROV v3,Planar Sphere mod,Yasraena,Tashia, and Brown Dragon.(I think thats it)
I look forward to the Dynaheir romance as I always liked her and hated she was killed off in BG2SoA.Keep up the good work on test it and I am sure it will be better for your imput.

Tactical mods are not my forte, but I think it was discussed a number of times, so you might want to ask Doro what's her take on beating Redemption or Redemption LR.

Her forum is here:

has anyone tried the
Ascension and Redemption modes of BG2:ToB?
i have
the result:
impossible to defeat the game
"the five" shows up together
plus that bastard Ironicus furthermore;
if you're not evil, you find Bodhi against you
does anyone have an idea of how to defeat that "seven"??????

Oh, you're using mods then, I have only played the game as published(give or take a patch). Well, and briefly, the oldest version of "Dark side of hte sword coast" but it was so buggy I just plain left alone all player mods after that.

SeaOtter, try this NPC guide, it will help you to chose your companions wisely :)

When I was playing, as much as I liked jaheira, poor, poor, khalid had an unfortunate "accident". It was really quite tragic, and I don't know why he ran full into that group of ogres not wearing any armor, and only wieldign a dagger. The body was damaged beyond hope of resurrection, and I jsut had to do my best to console the poor heart broken Jaheira.

This Tragedy was compounded further when Dynaheir Similiarly slain, in an accident.

Personally, I blame Drizzt and Elminster, for filling people's heads with delusions of heroism beyond good sense.

Yes, tragic, tragic...

I'll have to go back to Beregost I think I must have overlooked Kagain I haven't found all the others yet but I'm sure I will. I'm gonna hate leaveing Baldur's Gate though, I'm having alot of fun there
Ashara Posted - 08 Dec 2004 : 18:07:10
The good fighter types are probably Kagain (fighter in Beregost), Shar-Teel (fighter in Spiderwood) and Ajantis (paladin in Farmlands)

Thanks for the tips. However I did get teh console running and bumped my initial group up a couple levels and gave them a bit better equipment. I nixed Kahlid and Jaheria for the cleric of tempus (sorry names escape me right now) and also took the other ranger ( the one that talks like dirty harry) Finally I did take the Drow cleric of Shar but Shar is one of my favorite Goddesses so I had to. I have room for one more and hope to find a fighter type to fill the void when Minsc and his lover left. (soemthing to do with me taking the Drow on I wanted to drop just the caster but it didn't work that way.

The beauty is save one the party is some form of Neutral so that helps to.

I just knocked off the Red Wizards and so far I think this game has been exactly what the fans have said it was The only downside is that I find how much I really missed and liked 2e from playing this.

SPOILERS AHEAD

ONe solution. Forget the fighter. Create a ftr/Cle or just a cle. Then use protection again evil. When you meet mr assassin at FAI, use Imoen's wand (If it spawned for you) to disrupt his spells. Use PAEvil (Cle spell before you get to the stair well. Also, use Command spell against mage, as that sometimes works IF (big if) he doesn't make his save. Another Good character to use is a 1/2Elf Ran/Cle as they are the only race who offers that multi-class (Humans can duel class to it, but you wont advance anymore in your first class). Or recruit the Ftr Thief Montaran and Necromancer Xzar (same area you watch your step father get waxed) to work with you until you get to FAI, then if you are playing a good character, ditch them at the Inn since they are evil). For RPing purposes, assume that bigger parties mean long life to get to your first destination. Then get Jaheira and Khalid for a bit until you find the right party composition. Thats my two cents. That should help your early steps anyway. Jaheira and Khalid should have a few levels on you as well. Pick up EVERYTHING left by what you kill, pillage Xzar and Montaran before you kick them out (Scrolls and Potions mostly though Montaran's SLA always goes to Imoen

Well I started a new game last night and was killed as soon as I made it into the friendly arms tavern...This was after uber-munching my PC so I think it's time to find that Console
Ashara Posted - 24 Nov 2004 : 21:09:53
Indeed, they are. CLUA is the 'tester's cheat' convenient when you are testing the game or a modification for it. It helps you to, say, fully heal a character or ressurect him/her or instan kill an enemy, 'cheat in' an item etc. In short - those are cheats the community inherited from the designers. I would not advise using it while playing though, since it spoils the game a lot :)

But if you are absolutely stuck - just make a search for CLUA Console in your browser and there are a few pages who take you step by step through installing and using cheats.

Heh, next you will be using fan-made mods :)
the psychotic seaotter Posted - 24 Nov 2004 : 20:31:54
Thanks for the tips! I Have tried adjusting the difficulty but I didn't like taking the XP penalty for doing so.

I'll try restructuring the group like you suggested and I was wondering what is the CLUA console? Yeah I know this shows that I was mainly a console gamer but the PC RPG's are so much better.
Ashara Posted - 24 Nov 2004 : 19:34:59
You can:

- try to reduce the difficulty setting until you get a grip on playing
- sleep often and use healing/magic as much as you can
- try to increase your reputation and buy equipment that works for you
- archery is very potent in BG1 - use archers a lot (!)
- walk slowly, so you only come upon 1 or 2 enemy at a time when you have multiple spawns
- you might want to play with a full group; Then you can place Minsc and your main character upfront (pulling one of them out when they need healing) while keeping the rest of the party behind, shooting missles and casting magic.
- Chose to play with stronger NPCs. Jaheira and Khalid are not the best fighter/priest pair; I suggest Branwen/Kivan or Yslick/Kivan instead (or substitute Kivan with Coran later on);

and finally... heh, install CLUA console with cheat codes if you want your life slightly easier :)
