Posted - 18 May 2004 : 15:11:36 YEEEEAARRSS ago In BG I (maybe II...) I picked up a tome that when read says something to the effect of: "Why does a chair have arms and legs like a man but cannot walk?". When put into the items slot and then clicked, it produces the spell icon....yet, when clicking on anything afterward, nothing happens. In other words, it acts as if it has some sort of special ability, yet I cannot for the life of me figure it what it is...
Is this supposed to compliment one of the other tomes in some way?
Thanks folks! |

...actually they asked this question properly. It appeared as a scroll to be used as a spell. But it's a strange tome. Simple! |

Posted - 22 May 2004 : 19:38:23 Really? It hath always worked for us... Ok so we only tried it once and were rather unimpressed... Hmmm secrets still abound in the BG series |

Posted - 22 May 2004 : 17:35:48 But does it work? I believe that I tried it on hostile creatures before...to no avail... |

How do we know? We are the collector of the rare and unsual... like Bladuran's Butterknife... if only it could be used |

Posted - 21 May 2004 : 07:40:31 There is a brief mention of this on the Bioware forums here:
http://forums.bioware.com/viewtopic.html?topic=330261&forum=20
The item is classified as SCR2I (that’s 2i not twenty one). It can be found in the items list here;

From the sources I have located it does not seem tied to any particular quests or cross episode Easter eggs like the Big Metal Unit quest. My feeling is that it is as Arivia stated and simply a riddle to keep players guessing.

Posted - 21 May 2004 : 06:03:41 I'd like to help, but my copy of BG is currently in storage. It's not a game that I particularly liked (I actually preferred BG II and the expansion), so I really do not think I will be playing it again.
Anyway, I'll do a quick search on the web, and see if I can come up with anything.

Posted - 20 May 2004 : 14:20:25 Well, I'm not sure-it's been over two years since I've played BG I for any long period of time. However, said tome did fit quite well into Bioware's strategy and style for puzzle pieces, and I do remember having collected it at some period at time. I think it's from Durlag's Tower, that abandoned mage school(I forget the name) or possibly the area of ToTSC set beyond the Spine of the World... |

There's a "Summon cow" spell, and there are creature files of MDK2 characters. However, they can cause your game to crash. Amusingly enough, there's a "dm_cowsfromhell" command in NWN. When used, it summons a lot of cows, which randomly attacks the nearest NPC (whether it's a friendly, a neutral, or a hostile). |

Posted - 20 May 2004 : 04:49:47 Hmm I remember that scroll.... I think it charmed a monster if used upon it... So many intresting little scrolls... Like the MDK2 spell...
Never heard of it? Import a character from BG1 to BG2 with one of the unique books (Sarevok's diary, various letter and bounty notices, etc) and see what thou gets... all sort of odd ball things... Note that thou hath to pause it as soon as thee enters the game (before Irenicus shows up) and then just press 'I' to enter thy inventory... Note that the MDK2 spell will crash the game upon using it... Live and learn |

Posted - 19 May 2004 : 22:10:18 My deepest thanks Sarelle...for both your candor and your defense of my post...I am sure that good EcThelion meant no harm....he just came across a little abrasive...
Anyway...I will continue my research....I know the game basically inside and out...so it just sort of rankles me that I don't know what the hell that book does!!
Again, good to meet you Sarelle.......I will surely bother good Arivia for the answers I seek. |

Posted - 19 May 2004 : 20:15:11 Oooh, buy it right now - its different to BG2 (i wont say better, but not worse either) - lots of trudging around in the wilderness finding lots of cool things encounters and other stuff.
And the Party characters are more interesting too, even if they're not quite as interactive. (Especially like the fact that you dont just meet them all in a tavern, some you have to rescue, one you have to free from being a stone statue)
As to the original question, i dont remember for sure, but yes i think it may have been part of a quest of some kind.

As Arion said, this is a little harsh - his post made sense to me, at least, even if the problem seemed complicated.
Arion: I don't have BGI, so I can't help (I'm sure it isn't in BGII). Sorry and Good luck! If Arivia knows, badger her until she explains it! (Sorry Arivia - but you're a Senior Scribe now - extra responsibilities and all that! ) |

Posted - 19 May 2004 : 16:25:22 Spell Icon: the little icon that appears after you have chosen to cast a spell. For instance, if you are casting fireball, the spell icon appears, then you click your target with the icon to cast the spell. Hope THAT makes sense...
So then, Arivia, I wonder what puzzle it fits into? All of my research efforts thus far have come up cold....I'm beginning to wonder if it's just something they tossed in to screw with us....
And Ecthilion, thanks for your "oh-so-gentle" critique of my posting habits...now where is that Polymorph Other Into Mushroom Spell....?

Posted - 19 May 2004 : 09:16:28 It's a puzzle piece. I remember picking that up as part of one, and it fits into the Bioware style for such things. |
