I would like to bring to the attention to all of the Faerun lovers light myself that Ive heard truly devastating but hopefully not true news. First off, Black isle studios is gone. Out of the scene. ---IWD, BG games, O GOD--. ALso, I heard that bioware will stop with the FR scene, WHICH MAKES ME SO FREAGIN MAD AND SAD. Bioware Made the greatest RPG games, which guess what, WErE BASES IN FAERUN. Baldurs gate series and the acclaimed, my fav, neverwinter games. They said they want their own idea, but to me, the greatest joy of Forgotten Realms was that everything built upon each other. It was one big realm for Roleplayers fantasy come true. The whole single land idea brought a sense of unity and realism. I live in faerun half the time, well my mind wonders there, and To see BIoware take FR games down, would be truly devastating. If anyone gets the seriousness of this mssge, just reply with your thoughts and comments. I know I couldnt stand it to see bioware, teh greatest FR game maker ditch Faerun. It would truly be a heartblow and I CANT STAND ITTTTTTTTTTT. Please reply with your thoughts, fellow FR lovers. -Kaervok- Aluve

I loved all incarnations of Baldur's Gate, IWD and its expansion, and NWN, but in the end, I am almost afraid they are too popular. I dove into them becuase I could not find a gaming group after most of my friends moved away, and it was at least some comfort and the games were well done, were based on rules I knew, and had FR lore in them.

But as I got into playing online and looking into the forums on said games, I realized there is a whole genration to whom this IS the begining and ending of RPGs. And they have been raised to think "our" RPGs are a little behind the times becuase they are used to RPGs that incorporate button mashing and twitch reflexes in order to trigger 15 min cut scenes of scripted summoning spells.

I am just afraid that in marketing some successful RPGs, Wizards may have shuffled a whole generation of gamers to the PC or console by passing the pen and paper game entirely. I almost really want the D&D online game to flop becuase I don't want it to start on a new generation.

You know what triggered this fear? I saw a t shirt online that said "I'm not a geek, I'm a level 12 paladin" and in the replies afterword one thought the reference to Diablo, and another thought it a reference to (ugh) Everquest.

I'll stick with Bioware and maybe Obsidian Entertainment. They, at least, might come up with RPGs that appeal to both long-haired geeks like us (though my hair's not particularly long and I'm female...) and the more mainstream market (KotOR).

I have no hope nor illusion about D&D online. It's a MMORPG. Enough said. MMORPGs are all the same; you've seen one, you've seen them all.

Unfortunaly the gaming industry is leaving behind the "long haired geeks", and moving into the fast paced, create them in 8 months, beta test for 1 month and put it out into the market style.

The way of GREAT games are starting to come to an end.

I just wonder how Turbine Ent. will do with D&D Online?

If they want to macke a hack'a slash game thats fine by me, but I think it sucked that you couldent make your characket yourself, and I mean really SUCKED.

I agree. As ive said before, BG:DA made a nice change to not be caught up in a lot of role-playing stats and have a bit of the old sword-swinging, Diablo-style gaming. And im far from a hack-n-slash lover, my campaigns are heavy roleplay based and uncommon combat orientated.

Let's see.

BIS' disbanding is truly sad, but most of its bulk is now reborn as Obsidian Entertainment. And, to follow Gromnir's school of thoughts, what has BIS really produced?

- Planescape: Torment - amazing game, but doesn't appeal to the majority of gamers. Therefore, financially not-as-successful-as-it-should-be.

- Fallout series - much like Torment, though minus the "amazing" bit. I could never stand the turn-based combat and so didn't play it.

- IWD/IWD2 - hack'n'slash on Infinity Engine. The first is great at what it does, but the second... I believe the BIS guys admitted that IWD2 was no "labor of love" and was essentially something built to cash in the fame of the first. Close to a fiasco, it was.

- Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader - great for the first half, goes downhill into the realm of "What the hell?" rapidly afterward. A failure financially and otherwise.

Two projects (or more?) were canceled: Torn, Jefferson (BG3), and FO3. Not exactly a shining resume, is it? Oh, and Interplay isn't acting very smartly. BG3 was near finishing and it got cancelled. Even if it came out as a bugfest the likes of which will shame Troika, it would still have sold somewhat because of the name Baldur's Gate. For anyone interested, here's a RPGCodex article - http://www.rpgcodex.com/content.php?id=94

It's a snarky article, and I disagree with some of it, but the bits about Interplay are quite amusing and, sadly, true.

As for Bioware not doing FR anymore... I say, eh. IMO, their KotOR was one hell of a lot better than NWN and its expansion packs in every way, minus the lack of toolset. Maybe they're losing interest in FR or D&D. We shall see if their own original settings are any good. On the whole, though, FR/D&D electronic RPG department seems pretty bleak. The recent products:

BG: Dark Alliance - console. Hack'n'slash. Not even worth mentioning.

Greyhawk: Temple of Elemental Evil - not FR, but D&D. A big, big flop. Full of bugs, laughable writing, laughable "design decicions", has nothing going for it but combat, and even that gets old really fast. Almost unplayable at some point because the game'll slow down -- and no, it's not your CPU; it's the memory leak monster at work -- and/or crash to desktop repeatedly. I don't know why Troika even bothers anymore, especially after the not-so-good Arcanum. I bet people'll be a lot more leery now when they release Vampires: Bloodlines.

Forgotten Realms/DA2 - soon-to-come. Hack'n'slash, console. Again, not worth mentioning.

Ezindir the dark Posted - 20 Jan 2004 : 09:16:54
Yes, I 'ave got it now, really cool apperance editor.
And the mages robes looks COOOL!! My biggest problem with NwN is fixed.

And I recomend everyone to buy this.
Kaervok Posted - 05 Jan 2004 : 22:03:25
Lol, Ezindir, I can see where your coming from. But its great, in the Hotu, you have a special skill that allows you to change your clothing appearance, ex-adding robes and stuff, and also, you can change your weapon appearance, but thats for a few gold. You can craft wands and do amazingly fun things. I really suggest you get them, they are great. Kaervok.

You need a good photo editing program like Photoshop or Paintshop Pro, etc and have to know how to use it to change the image/pixel size of the avatar you want to use, but it can be done.
I have a txt doc that I could send you that tells how to do it if you're interested. I was able to use my avatar from here in the game.

BTW - you really should get the expansion paks for NWN. the stuff they added to them makes it even better than the original game.
---------------------------------------------------------------I was talking about the way the mages look, not their avatars, the way their body look. For exampel in BG you have long wide hooded robes, but in NWN you have this comic looking clothes, looks almost like Roobin Hood in his tights.

Yes, that is exactly what my txt doc contains. I seem to remember getting it from a fan site somewhere. They probably just cut and pasted the text right from the bioware site. Man, that site just ROCKS! Thanx for the link, Arivia.
(and for saving me the trouble of having to email it out! )

At least Undertide, and Hordes were cheap. I think they run 29.99 here in the US. Not a bad price for the expanded tilesets, wireframes, and scripts. Plus the Hordes module is just far better than the original game. Anyway.. to get a whole new game for only 29.99 instead of 69 bucks is a real bonus in my book. (online modules are free in most cases)
