Can someone help me.

I'm trying to play Pool of Radiance again for PC on my XP based PC

I downloaded DOSBOX easy as pie

I downloaded Pool or Radiance online easy as pie

When I click 'start' inside the pool of radiance file, nothing happens ([perhaps i should be thankful)

When I open DOSBOX, I just see a prompt and I don't know the command to use access or 'Mount' pool of radiance on my computer/to DOSBOX

Can anyone help?

I'm pretty much an idiot. Any explanation would have to start with the most basic instructions. . like 'press the 'start' button on your computer located at bottom left of the screen' ok, maybe not that basic, but, pretty close.

Mod Edit: Shifted to a more appropriate shelf.

I used Dfend reloaded. could never get dos box to work. Also you can slow it down so you don't miss anything.

Thats a RPG fan for you. How do I make my computer act like the ones did 15 years ago, so I can play a DOS based game

I've fired up Pool of Radiance on my XP machine (for the 100th time I'm sure) and yes, you will miss out on clues with the speed of the machines today. As long as you don't mind keeping a walkthru loaded as you're playing to consult if you think you've missed something, the games are still playable. I have never been able to get DOSBOX to work with anything, so I can't help you there.

I find the larger monitors of today to be just as jarring, since everything becomes that much bigger.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is one more game that just isn't compatible with today's computers...I have had hard luck with many of the oldies.

At one point a few years back, I loaded up the old Pool of Radiance/etc series on an earlier Pentium machine. It was ridiculously fast, and combat (at least the monsters/etc turns) went by at blazing speeds. However, it was still sort of playable, since the game is turn-based (ie, pauses automatically for your characters' turns).

I'm not sure what DOSBOX is, so I can't really help you there. However, there should be a file called "Pool" in the location where you unpacked the files to. (Specifically, Pool.exe) This is the file that was used to start the game, and should still be valid (though you might still have the 386/speed emulation issue).

Hmm, I am not sure how to help you start the game on an XP, however I do know you need to make your computer think it is 386 with those processing speed or you will not be able to win the game. Faster computers go too quickly though information screens that you will need to know some information to complete the game.
