Hello,
I remember about a product called FR Encyclopedia that actually never saw the light of the world (I mean this worlds' light ).

I was thinking about making something like an encyclopedia about the FR, putting info on locations, major characters and even the timeline.

I would like to hear some thoughts on this matter. What would you like to see in something like that? Any ideas? Any wishes?

P.S. Keep in mind that this is just an idea, don't expect tomorrow to see Microsoft's FR Encyclopedia DVD Edition though this would be great, wouldn't it?

That's right, or you could simply create a listing of twenty of so monsters, from the books, roll a d20 and create your own encounter tables. This allows more control, because you can populate the tables with monsters you like, or monstrous creatures that are not encountered often, and so forth.

So I can use the tables of the FR DMs Screen as well as some info of the Silver Marches and Unapproachable East that feature some random encounters depending on the area, right?

Perhaps I could link them to the actual area. For example if you search for a specific area, you gonna also get the regional monsters. I like it! :)

You could also generate some Random Encounter tables for specific areas of the Realms that normally don't get a lot of attention or detail in any of the published material. Utilising some of the information from the sourcebooks on monstrous inhabitants to specific regions, you could create a table based on a d20 roll to determine what type of monsters are encountered in the listed area.

Ok! I am working on that ... anything else?

What I meant by regional stats was, quick listed details like population numbers, government types, city/town general alignment, major temples in the city etc. This information would be relevant for those people who need quick access to the information to build up potential campaign sites, or as a quick method of searching for a friendly place to rest, or to buy equipment for the PC's.

You could have the stats listed along with the city's or town's name - creating a list of all the major points of interest in the Realms - for example Westgate, Tantras, Waterdeep, Suzail.

Well the maps thing is a bit tricky because it would need to scan everything and after all many maps float around the net. It's a nice but for later perhaps.

Could you elaborate on that Regional Stats?

The only real differences between 2e and 3e FR material is mostly stats and rules. Most of the original history of the Realms is unchanged, or has been slightly altered to incorporate some fluff changes apparent since the introduction of 3e.

The ability to search for relevant Realms information is key to the whole structure of the encyclopedia.

So you say that the 2e is ok but the 3e is not?
But the Realms is one not two thing, not to mention that who and how can someone distiguish the material? After all it's so mingled ... I see 2e and 3e as the same thing ... well 3e is always correct regarding inconsistencies but .. you know!

Anyway, let's get back to the original subject. Regardless the material, what would you like to see? As I see it the most important thing about something like that is the ability to search things.

You might be seeing mostly the 2e stuff. That, and basically anything but the latest (3e) releases are open-sourced; you can download them for non-profit public use. Or something like that.

Actually I was thinking of having official material. Although this may seem odd, I believe it is the exact same thing as having all those sites around the net full of FR info. As far as I can see they are numerous and there is nothing wrong.

I don't know if I miss anything but I haven't seen or heard anything about violating any (C). Please correct me if I am wrong, but I was hoping to stick with official material. I see at other sites official maps to realmslore and info on NPCs, Gods etc ... in that context I was thinking something similar but more dynamic.

While this does at the outset seem to be a good idea, I am curious as to where you will draw the information to compose this encyclopedia. You really can't use official material, so do you intend to write your own fluff and stats for official Realms information or will it be entirely fan-created material, so that others can contribute their information as well?.

Let me know what you think, as I would be interested in helping to at least get this project of the ground, and perhaps contributing some information of my own.

Good learning...
