How's the subject line? Catchy enough? Too much cheddar?

But seriously. I'm looking for a good name for a gold elf female, the mother of Elaith's daughter Azariah. The person who submits the winning name will receive a signed copy of Best of the Realms III: The Stories of Elaine Cunningham.

Not many rules: Post your submission as a comment to the appropriate post on my LiveJournal blog, http://e-cunningham.livejournal.com. Multiple submissions are fine. Please don't submit names with apostrophies.

A few guidelines: She is not a member of a prominent family, and should not be linked to any existing character in game products or novels. Since there are already several female elves whose names start with an "A" in Elaith's life--Amnestria, Azariah, Amlaruil, Arilyn--I would prefer something different and distinctive. Names that follow Realmsian patterns of nomenclature are preferable to real-world names, including those of Celtic origin. In other words, no Jennifers or Blodwyns need apply. Avoid the promiscuous use of vowels. (Where I come from, Eiillyonileaui does not look or sound like an elf's name.) Sexy and feminine is good, but nothing too overtly Victoria's Secret. And please, something that's possible for your average speaker of American English to pronounce.

For the record, I don't have a name in mind, so I'm not looking for something that comes closest to a preconceived ideal. What I AM looking for is a name that fits a sun elf who'd get involved with a moon elf rogue. This name will be used in a short story about their ill-fated romance.

Wow! Congratulations, Alorin! I wish that I had known about this contest sooner... I just now happened across it. Mrs. Cunningham, if you should ever need another female elven name, I would like to suggest one if I may. I (just last night as a matter of fact) came up with Alashara of which I am rather fond, and I hope that you will be as well. My best to you, and I am looking forward to reading your newest book. I am sure that it will be as wonderful as all of your others have been.

Deepest respects,
Penknight

My congratulations, too, AlorinDawn!

Maybe Big Al will now reward you with access to the library?

The winning name was Kaliawen Dawnstar. The surname, "Dawnstar," was suggested by Candlekeep's own AlorinDawn.

Many thanks to all who participated! There's an impressive list of elven names on this thread, and settling on one of them (well, actually TWO of them...) was a tough choice. But I love the name--it's fluid, feminine, and is just exactly right for the lovely gold elf courtesan who's been waiting in the shadows somewhere in the back of my mind.

Good question. How about the end of the weekend? Midnight (EST) on Sunday, to be specific.

I love this idea Elaine! Neat.

I'm going to have to spend some time thinking about my submission though... and that means doing some research.

What type of time frame does this contest have?
