Posted - 18 Nov 2006 : 22:03:38 Hi, at the end of Elfsong, there is a green dragon that enters Waterdeep in the Field of Triumph area. Did Elaine just ignore Waterdeep anti-dragon ward or there is something I miss somewhere?

That would suck, because I have a fondness for the old lore.
I am very fond of the old stuff as well. I truly do wish that I had had the chance to enjoy a session of 1st Edition AD&D. I personally started playing in 2nd Edition with a paladin.
I know that opinions of old editions are best left aside, but it often seems that 3e is more concerned with getting things out than making an enjoyable story for us to enjoy. Don't get me wrong... I am very fond with the information and style of 3e, I truly am. I am just old fashioned, I guess. |

Posted - 19 Nov 2006 : 03:47:27 I was a big comics fan in my youth, and one of my favourites back in the day was called "All Star Squadron". This comic series created the term 'retroactive continuity' - it encapsulates my attitude to the Realms (and that of others also).

Posted - 19 Nov 2006 : 01:45:34 Garnet's magic screwed the ward up...works for me, plus it makes her death even more ironic for if she had not disturbed Waterdeep's peace and stuff her magic would not have lowered the ward and the green dragon would not have come through to get her. No retconning needed at all |

I think that Boyd and Krashos are the name of two of the wizards |

Have to look up FR1, if it isn't mentioned there, I think Elfsong came out before the Waterdeep box where the ward was first mentioned
Ed's Waterdeep & the North was released in 1987.
The City of Splendors boxed set was from 1994. Elaine's Elfsong was also 1994.
Eric's City of Splendors: Waterdeep was from July '05.
So it would appear likely that Elaine simply did not have complete access to all the lore (because most of it hadn't been written yet) regarding the dragon ward when she was writing Elfsong back in 1994. Thus, it wasn't really through intentional ignorance on Elaine's part... just merely what was known then being compared to what's known now about the ward itself.

Work is progressing slowly, but we are hoping for a breakthrough at any time.
Thank you for your patience.
Edit: We are also in negotiations with the creators of the "Men in Black" movies over the possible inclusion of the MiB memory-erasing devices in the spell, so that the memories of those who read the novels pre-ret-con will be altered to fit the new data. This, admittedly, is a long shot, but it seemed worth an attempt. |

Posted - 18 Nov 2006 : 23:28:44 I was reading about this the other day. there have been instances of dragons being able to/ or let passed the wards. Addtionally, I read that in the harbor, the way the ward is shaped, leaves a certain area not warded. thus allowing entry. It does state that there have been instances of dragons entering in this manner. I will look up the reference and page number, if anyone is interested. |

Posted - 18 Nov 2006 : 23:22:38 After reading the entry about it in CoS I think that Eric found this explanation after the book was written, probably that Elaine never heard about it at the time of writing. |

Posted - 18 Nov 2006 : 22:29:54 Or Elaine didn't know about such a ward since it really wasn't detailed/ever mentioned until the new Waterdeep sourcebook. Elfsong came out 12 years ago, so it might not be her "fault" for not using material that she didn't know about. |

Posted - 18 Nov 2006 : 22:19:03 It is mentioned in City of Splendors:Waterdeep under Maaril's description. He made a deal for passage using his ward key in exchange for the dragon's hatchling as a familiar. |

Posted - 18 Nov 2006 : 22:16:04 Also posible is that the Dragon rolled a 20 as a save. No magic is 100 percent and is subject to failure. |

Posted - 18 Nov 2006 : 22:06:02 My guess is that due to the trouble Garnet caused the ward was lowered. |
