After the Icewind Dale trilogy without too many spoilers on Dark Elf Tri amd Cleric Quintet?.
My local library only had Legacy after Icewind dale :/. |

Spoilers:
While I agree that Wulfgar's death would have meant something more if he'd stayed dead and introduced an element of risk into the series, I thought the way he deals with his demons in Paths of Darkness made a refreshing change to the series. |

This might come as a shocker, but the author and the character are sometimes one and the same. I wonder how that could come about?
Also, Nerusbian, RAS brought Wulfgar back due to a bombardment of complaints over his death. How would you feel if a hundreds of folk ranted incessent negatives about killing off characters, hmm? People don't like having their security blankets stolen, you know! |

Finished, now onto DE trilogy.
Some comments on this one though - >Spoilers Below<
Have to say I was abit dissapointed with the last story. Firstly it was abit rushed. Alot of unlikely events happened in a short space of time.
Secondly, when the witch first gave us the message/poem I and im sure many other speculated between Wulfgar and Zaknafein.
But the story then proceeds to purposely and somewhat vigoursly mislead (but with valid points) you to Zaknafein instead so that when it finally results in Wulfgar you are just left thinking, no thats wrong. Instead of, ah its so obvious now.
Lastly and worst of all, Salvatore brought Wulfgar back to life. Its wrong for so many reasons. The characters and the world have moved on since his death and he was firmly embedded in the recent history and lore. His sudden rebirth completely destroys all that.
Also it now means that none of the main characters has truly died after 7 books in the continued canon despite some extremely dangerous adventures.
It gives the impression of a 'lived happily ever after' fairy tale rather than a more mature fantasy novel.
Oh well eh :/. |

They can be pretty preachy, I'll give you that. They do give some insight into Drizzt which is something you wouldn't get just by reading through the action. I'm left wondering, though, how much of that is Drizzt and how much is Salvatore coming through? He's a great author and I love the Drizzt series, but the journal entries just leave me wondering whose voice we're hearing there: Drizzt's or Bob's.
Also, I would read the books in order if at all possible. It just keeps you from getting confused while you're reading and wondering "How did we get here?".
Furthermore, I'm right there with you, bookwise. I have only just started The Halfling's Gem. I've only been reading the Realms books for about 2 years now and most of my time has been spent on Elminster and the other Chosen of Mystra.
And another thing, the Icewind Dale trilogy was written before the Dark Elf Trilogy, with Wulfgar as the intended star of the books, which makes sense because The Crystal Shard is essentially Wulfgar's "coming of age" story. The Dark Elf Trilogy was written as a prequel afterwards to explain to the readers just who on Toril this Chaotic Good drow was, why he was on the surface, and why a dwarf was his best friend.
So although it would be best to read the Dark Elf Trilogy first, if you read the Icewind Dale trilogy first, you won't be any different than the people who grabbed it up and read it when it was first published. No worries. |

I dont think the CQ characters show up until later in the series, its been a while though
As far as the order, I would have read the Dark Elf Trilogy first and there will be some spoilers from the series in the journals. But it shouldnt kill it completely |

Dark Elf Trilogy takes place before Icewind as far as timeline is concerned. Having not read Dark Elf will likely only confuse you while you read the journal entries but should not "spoil" anything. Cleric Quintet has almost nothing to do with the Drizzt books however if you have not read the cleric quintet prior to the Drizzt books that include the CQ characters, you will run into a rather large spoiler to the CQ series |
