Just wondering where to start the Drizzit books, Im looking to start with his introduction to the world, not the first published but when he first came into the scene. I have The dark elf trilogy, the ice wind dale trilogy, the legacy, the seige of darkness starless night passage to dawn, and the spine of the world and the other 3. So maney but im not sure where to start any ideas please ) |

I read the Dark Elf Trilogy first and I think either way you go would be fine. If you plan on reading the all the Drizzt novels back to back to back and so on I would suggest reading them in chronological order rather than the order they were released |

Well, what's more important to you when you read a series that features a recurring main character -- a character's in-story history, or his outside development by way of the author?
If you're more interested in how the charater progresses through his/her own history as it pertains to the story being told -- take the RAS books and read them in chronological order. If you want to see how the Drizzt character evolved through RAS's earlier work with "Icewind Dale" when compared to what he established later in the "Dark Elf" trilogy... go with published order.

((Just to add another opinion to an already muddied pool of them...))
Published order always made sense to me. The character evolves as the author writes more, so by reading them in the order published ("written"), you get the flavor of the characters as they grow.
I found the Icewind Dale trilogy to be a great set of stories in which to meet Drizzt and company... |

I started off by reading the Halfling's Gem. Confused the hell outta me but I was hooked. Starting with Homeland does explain quite a lot about drow society and why Drizzt did what he did. Do what you feel like but I would definitely start with book one, Homeland. |

Then it might more appropriate that you do in fact read them in published order rather than, as I suggested above, chronological order. By the time the "Dark Elf" trilogy is published, RAS has certainly refined the Drizzt character a little more from his initial portrayal in the "Icewind Dale" trilogy. It might actually be worth you reading more about how the character developed after the "Icewind Dale" trilogy and into the "Dark Elf" trilogy.
Then again, I still like Realms stories to follow the timeline... so if I were approaching RAS's FR novels for the first time -- I'd still start with the "Dark Elf" trilogy.

I think i have them all from icewind dale thru the two swords just seems like alot of books to go into and keep going thru ! I guess unless thier as good as some people say it shouldnt be a problem. Iv never read any RA before. |

Only if I have only 2 books of a trilogy...in which case I re-read the first two when I finally have book 3... Last Mythal...argh!!! |

I found a simmilar post back on like page 30 but its still nice haveing up to date help ! Im kinda scared to jump into the books also since thiers so maney of them it seems like it would be hard to read one series then move to something else and come back ! Anyone else have that problem ? |

While you can "get away" with reading them in published order without missing too much of Drizzt's backstory in Menzoberranzan... I usually like to read FR novels as they relate to the actual timeline of the setting.
Which also means I wanted long enough for the original "Dark Elf" trilogy to be written by RAS and published after the "Icewind Dale" trilogy was released. That gave me the opportunity to read them in chronological order instead.
I'm another who favors reading them in chronological order... Myself, I didn't read the Icewind Dale trilogy until they started putting out the Dark Elf trilogy. It wasn't deliberate -- that was just when I got the books. |

A little off topic but interesting. My wife bought me a T-shirt for my birthday from Jinx that was awesome. It had a casino sign with the following written on it:
Drizzt
Here all week.
I loved it! Plus, who wouldn't want a Drizzt shirt? It'll confuse the hell out of my relatives. |

i read icewind dale before the dark elf books and i wish i would have done it the other way around but thats just me. |

I read the Dark Elf trilogy first, and then the Icewind Dale trilogy. In hindsight, I think I should have done them the other way around. Icewind Dale has a lot more action and a good introduction to the characters in most of the rest of the series. The Dark Elf trilogy, while it has a fair amount of action on its own, also has a lot of introspection, with Drizzt virtually alone much of the series.
It's all a matter of taste, really, but I'd certainly start with one of these 2 series. Which one is really up to you. |

i would start with homeland, book one of the dark elf tril. i read them chronologically, i think it's more fun having the background info with this character before you go further. i read LotR first then i read the silmarillion and i kinda wish i had the background of the silmarillion so i could've caught all the references made in the trilogy. if you feel that way too, start with homeland and get to know drizzt's roots. |

No worries my friend. Just by bringing up either Drizzt or the return of the Archwizards, will stir the dust in FR fans. I for one liked em all  . Whatever order you choose to read the first portion of the Drizzt series, is personal choice. I started with the dark elf trilogy, but wished I had read the Icewind dale trilogy first. it just comes down to personal preference here. Have fun, good reading, and let us know what you think of any of them.
P.S. once you get into the Drizzt novels, you will understand what scribes here were talking about in regards to "drizzit" |

ok ok Drizzt sorry. Well ok im still not sure to start i didnt look at the order yet i guess it would help. Im reading the Archwizard books now and Geez i think thier really good ! |

I read them in chronological order rather than printing order. Which would mean starting with the dark elf trilogy. But you really can't go wrong with Drizzt. |
