Hi, People just wanted to get in on the fun. I just started reading FR a few days ago and my first book was spellfire ! As some recomended from my viewings. It was very good and hard to put down so thanks for the advice. I guess now im going to crown of fire, iv noticed some of you didnt like it as much as the first book but i took a shine to Shandril and narm and the crew. I Guess what i was looking for is some input, I used to play eq and i read some 50 odd dragonlance books and im more into Giants and wizards than sword fighting, Any thoughts ? I already have about 80 FR books iv purchesed as a heads up and iv read alot on the forms but everyone is diffrent and has thier own ideas !

Well im excited to read more about the gods, someone at our bookstore told me he liked FR more than dragonlance because of less godly intervention. But its nice seeing the "bosses" so to speak.

Yes, the Shadow of the Avatar trilogy ties in with the Time of Troubles trilogy.

Yes it gets into what was going on behind the scenes so to speak. It covers what Elminster was doing and the main characters of this trilogy are the Rangers Three

My advise is... read em all and make up your own opinions. You can get a general consensus from the scribes here, but as you can see, even we are of differing opinions of even which order to read Drizzt novels I liked the avatar trilogy. You need to keep in mind that they were written at almost the beginning of "published" realms lore material. Things are expected to change, especially after 20 years, along with differing opinions

Avatar isn't even a good way to introduce someone to reading...
Narm on The Farm Posted - 29 May 2006 : 19:46:33
Im waiting on shadow of the avatar to arive in the mail, i was going to begin with the avatar trilogy first before spellfire and such but i read some people didnt think it was a good introduction to the realms. I wish i could get her to read them but shes not to interested it seems. But the best part is she works evenings so after i get home i have the whole night to myself to read !
The Sage Posted - 29 May 2006 : 16:55:43
Book IV of Elaine's Songs and Swords series, yes.
Mace Hammerhand Posted - 29 May 2006 : 16:44:08
Also, Thornhold has been made part of Songs&Swords, book 4 I think... so unless you really want the novel to be a "Harper" book check it out that way.

The "Avatar" and "Shadow of the Avatar" trilogies are good novels to read next -- mostly because they deal with the Time of Troubles event which shaped a great deal of the future Realmslore to come.

or harpers but im kinda weird with starting a series before i have them all and i still lack The veiled dragon and Thornhold
Well, The Veiled Dragon is the twelth book in the series and Thornhold is the sixteenth and last book of the HARPERS series. Remember though, they're mostly all stand-alone novels (except for The Veiled Dragon which features a character from the first HARPERS novel -- The Parched Sea). So you should be able to read the earlier ones with too much problem and it'll give you time to find the ones you're missing.

for the harpers haveing trouble finding them at a lowish price
Try nobleknight.com and dragontrove.com.

My partner, the Lady K, partially-solved the problem I have with buying more books that I read a month by reading them herself .

I think im going to jump into the twilight giants next or mabey the archwizard books a guy at our local book store said Denning is a good read. I wanna read the Elminster book but as of now i still need elminster in hell, i just cant find it in hardback anywhere but i have the other 4 in hardback so i wanna get it before i start !

Narm, I don't know where you live, but on ebay.de I have seen the HC of Elminster in Hell still being sold...

Don't know if that helps.
darkcrow Posted - 29 May 2006 : 06:08:34
The Elminster Series is definetly a series you don't have to read in order back to back, because a lot of time goes by in between each book and they are a story of it's own and not linked to the other books in the series in any way. He makes alot of appearances in alot of the other novels ( which I think is kind of neat) which makes it impossible for Greenwood to string them together. But thats just my opinion.

Jumping into the "Archwizards" trilogy just after Ed's Spellfire books isn't really a good idea. Far too much has occured in the Realms and in its history to properly understand what you'll be reading in the RotAW trilogy. Unless of course, you've already read the relevant sourcebooks that deal with the shades and their return -- like Lords of Darkness and the "Campaign Journal" in Player's Guide to Faerun -- in which case you'll have a far idea what's going on.

As it is... I'd proceed more slowly toward familiarising myself with Realms fiction. Now that you're done with Ed's Spellfire books... why not try the HARPERS series or the FINDER'S STONE trilogy? Maybe even start with a few of the early anthologies like Realms of Valor and Realms of Infamy or Elaine's books.

Anything by Elaine Cunningham will be great and Paul Kemp's Erevis Cale trilogy was absolutely outstanding!!

The twilight giants trilogy was O.K, for what it was supposed to be, but not the greatest in my opinion, check it out though and see what "you" think. The return of the archwizards was very good in my opinion,. but has stirred a lot of debate with avid realms fans. Additionally, the series of elminster books is a great addition to realms lore, elminster in hell was my least favorite of these though.

Well you are in luck because starting in July FR is realeasing, I believe, 2 new novels in a Series called The Wizards. Some other novels featuring wizard would be anything with Elminster in the title assuming you have not read them yet. The only novels I can think of of the top of my head about giants is the twilight giants trilogy but it has been many years since I have read it so I can't tell you much about it. I remember enjoying it but I need to read thenm a second time this summer.

Welcome to Candlekeep!

Feel free to ask any questions you may have... A lot of us have been Realms fans for years, and we know a thing or three about the setting. Plus, we've got some of the authors and creators here!

As for the rest of us, we are friendly, mostly harmless, and occasionally strange... Enjoy your stay!

As for novels... Though we never quite reached a consensus, this is a topic that was discussed at length in the Experienced help for recommending FR Novels thread. Perusing that scroll may be helpful for you.
