My question to the great loremasters of Candlekeep is this:
Should these anthologies be read before, during or after their repspective RSE series for maximum effect in character understanding and fewest spoilers to the novels?
Thank you, good sirs. |

Posted - 08 Feb 2006 : 15:48:32 Hello-
It occured to me last night that the following might be a useful addition to Candlekeep:
A list of all the anthologies - with notations of what (if any) trilogy or other books that it is related to. Also - an inclusion of the relative date (if known) would be good.
I know that there is the list that already exists of the Realms fiction - and the dates - but it might not be known to some of our visitors - as well as not having the trilogy/book relationship listed, nor the author (I think).
I guess what I envision is something like this:
Realms of the Dwarves Bruenor's Birthday RA Salavatore 1370 The Birthday Trilogy
I dont know if its really different enough to be of any use - but I figured I'd suggest it. Can't make progress if ideas are not shared, even if this is not used! :)

As Richard Lee Byers noted, his story while featuring some really good elven characters, focuses more on The Year of Rogue Dragons trilogy.
The only story tied to the trilogy, and very loose at that, is Richard Baker's "The Bladesinger's Lesson." Everything else is not tied to The Last Mythal trilogy. In fact, I feel a couple are not even tied that well into the elven race theme of the anthology. |

My story in Realms of the Elves has nothing to do with The Last Mythal. It is a prequel to The Year of Rogue Dragons, my own dang RSE.
Perhaps something to do with how the Rage came into being? *Hope* |

Thanks for mentioning that SB!
I am curious though - and it may not be known quite yet - but are any of the stories not particularly tied into the trilogy?
I ask mainly because I'd kinda like to read something form the book - but have not read any of the Mythal books yet - as I tend to wait until they are all out....
Thanks!

Posted - 08 Feb 2006 : 04:37:01 For those wondering about Realms of the Elves, this anthology can be read without worry over spoilers for The Last Mythal trilogy. Given the diverse make up of the featured stories within the anthology, it shouldn't matter when it is read. |

I can't speak to Realms of the Elves, but it seems to me that all of the RSE anthologies have some stories that take place during into the trilogy (including mine in Realms of the Dragons II). In Realms of the Deep, all of them do.
I'd go with Murray's assessment -- the anthologies are never, as far as I can tell, "must-reads" before the RSE itself, and neither do they spoil a RSE. If anything, sometimes the stories in the anthologies are tied into the RSE trilogy, so they will make more connections if read during the anthology, if not after. "Strength of the Jester" is a good case-in-point: if you weren't at least indirectly aware of the Year of Rogue Dragons, Murray's story might raise a tad bit of confusion. (What's this "Rage"? What's going on with the dragons?)
For me, I've found that I do best with anthologies if I read them during the second book or between books 2 & 3 -- about, not coincidentally, when they are released.
As for practical matters, I can't speak to the other stories in RoE, but I know mine involves the Last Mythal only tangentially, taking place about ten years previous.

Posted - 07 Feb 2006 : 15:59:49 The link doesn't work zauriel. As for RotD, I'll go with Mr. Byer's suggestion. Pity the authors of the other RSE's aren't here to answer that question...as their stories in the anthologies might have similar issues when placed in context with the timeline of the trilogies. |

Posted - 07 Feb 2006 : 09:52:07 I would say it would be better to read the RSE series then progress on to the anthologies, because it always worked for me, perhaps it might for you, Sheriff Joe. |

Posted - 07 Feb 2006 : 08:18:27 It won't make a large difference for which order you read them I would think.
Mr Byers: It has been quite a while since I read Realms of the dragon, did your short story involve characters from the Year of the rogue dragons trilogy? Sorry for my poor memory. |
Richard Lee Byers |
Posted - 06 Feb 2006 : 19:21:20 My advice is that you read The Rage first, Realms of the Dragons next, and The Rite after, because my short story in RotD occurs between the two novels. |

That is a very good question indeed, SheriffJoe. I'm not sure that all the stories contain date specifics, as some novel chapters are known to do and if any mini-spoilers are contained in the anthology tales. Perhaps our resident authors who have a story within these anthologies can shed some light? |
