Posted - 25 Jul 2005 : 15:06:08 I just completed the Twilight Giants trilogy, and for the most part, I enjoyed it. My one complaint is that I found Queen Brianna to be an unsympathetic character. I thought Tavis was an excellent character, he was motivated at all times by his love for Brianna. Brianna on the other hand, did not deserve such unswerving loyalty in light of her actions. She treated Tavis horribly throughout the series. To recap:
<Spoilers below>
The Ogre's Pact: She was captured by Goboka after accusing Tavis of being a thief, even though she knew Tavis was incapable of lying.
The Giant Among Us: Once Tavis has risked life and limb to save her in The Ogre's Pact, and she confesses her love for him, she still refuses to marry him, because of the political ramification of the queen marrying a giant-kin. If that weren't bad enough she then openly considers the advances of another suitor, right in front of Tavis. She tries to get Tavis (who is incapable of lying) to go along with her marrying some noble, but maintaining their relationship on the side. She sends Tavis away, and is enspelled by the suitor (The Ettin in disguise) but luckily Tavis returns just in time to save her.
The Titan of Twilight: Brianna has finally married Tavis, and has been pregnant for three years. Once the baby is born (he's the size of a two year-old) Briann at first sees the hideous face of the Ettin, but later it becomes Tavis' face. Everyone who looks at the child seems to see either the hideous face of the Ettin, or the handsome face that resembles Tavis. When Tavis looks upon the child, he sees the ugly Ettin face, and Brianna turns on him, threatening to have him killed if he comes near the babe, etc.
I really enjoyed this series, but in my opinion, it was hurt by the fact that Brianna was such a pathetic character. I could not like her, and believe me, I tried. How could Tavis have continuously endured her abuse and mistrust? I think Brianna was more like her father than she would have cared to admit. I am curious if anyone else felt the same way about Brianna....

On a sidenote, do you realize that for a Troy Denning book. This series has the fewest deaths in it. Almost the entire cast survive and most of the people in the kingdom too.
