Posted - 13 Jan 2003 : 16:09:18 All those are good series to start off and I own all most oll of them so I do highly recommend them as well. But I beleive that the fist book you should read is "Elminster: Making of a Mage" followed by "Elminster in Myth Drannor" and the "Temptation of Elminster". These tree books not only go into detail about Elminster but also about the realms in general. For me it seems that the Forgotten Realms revolve around Elminster in that he has had a dabble in much of its existance. Thats my opinion anyway. |

Posted - 09 Jan 2003 : 21:17:36 Id recommend reading the Heroes of Phlan Trilogy as theyre quite nice stories and varied, as well as the Harpers Series....you cant get a more wider and broad range than that series!
Id agree with ArcticKnight on the Dark Elf Trilogy followed by Icewind Dale too.
I personally started with The Moonshae Trilogy, I think mainly because it was the first series to be released for the Realms.
The Sembia series is very highly recommended, but Id suggest reading them continually as some events pass from one book to the other and if theyre not read back to back then you may miss some points.
To gain a good base for Realmslore, The Avatar Trilogy is a MUST read! Essential major Realms-events books to read for the ultimate in Realmslore gathering, IMO, would be:
The Avatar Trilogy The Empires Trilogy The Threat from the Sea Trilogy The Cormyr Saga The Return of the Archwizards Trilogy
I think id better stop there before I end up mentioning every FR book ever published

Posted - 09 Jan 2003 : 19:55:42 hmm although those are good books , i dont think suggesting books in the middle of series's would be good for a new reader.
The Drizzt books are the best selling. Start with the Dark Elf Trilogy followed by the Icewind Dale Trilogy, then Legacy of the Drow series, then Paths of Darkness series then Hunters Blades Trilogy ( all about the same group of characters)
The Avatar Trilogy along with Prince of Lies and Crucible is a good place to start as well. the Sembia series that includes"heirs of prophecy" is great as well but deals less with the grand scope of the realms and more with just sembia.
anywhere is a good place!!!! |

"Heirs of Prophesy"
Any of the "Realms of ..." books. (Short stories about established characters in other trilogies and series.)
There is no real set order to read the FR books in like the Dragonlance books.
Have fun! |
