Book Four of the Nobles series. Trying to read through this book has been a painful experience, and I'm wondering if anyone else who has read the book has an opinion on it. This is the first time that reading a FR book has become such a chore, but I've got about 30 pages to go, so...

While I loathed Once Around the Realms, I actually enjoyed this one. I do have a soft spot for the Moonsea region, so that might explain it.

I didn't like it.Though I read it a long time ago.I remember that it wasn't that good IMO....

I've always been surprised by all the flack this novel gets. I actually thought it was pretty entertaining. It's a VERY light read with a good story. In a few spots the humor overly silly, but it is also pretty dark in some areas (A LOT of people die). I think many people bashed this book just because it's the same author as the infamouse "Once Around the Realms", which admittedly was weak. However, Thomson stepped it up for this one. Don't expect something Savlatoresque, but just enjoy it for what it is; a smooth flowing, entertaining, book.

I never really liked any of those novels in the series, I even skipped over the 'King Pinch' story in the Realms of Valor anthology the first time I read through that book. Later though I went back and read over it, after I had finished the entire Nobles series, and even then, my interest for this series was still quite low.

Well, King Pinch was passable, though unlikely to have sold much if it wasn't FR. Escape from Undermountain was also interesting, though someone said on here someplace that it was a rip-off of an older book. Or perhaps it was a movie; it was set in New York, anyway.

I have to agree, King Pinch was the most original and best book out of that series. The rest of the Nobles book were passable at best.

What do you mean? I wasn't planning on going anywhere with it.

I think I see where that last particular post is going .

I found it quite painful

The nobles series was quite uninspiring IMO

If you can see past the layers of cheeze that is Brian Thompson. It is an entertaining book.

Maybe this is what happens when an editor writes a book and puts his own name on it.
"Yes,sir--Very good book sir--wouldn't change a thing,sir"

hmmmm , i didnt think it was that bad, out of the whole nobles series it rates higher then The Council Of Blades or The Simbuls Gift. really IMNSHO if u pick up a book titled "The Mage in the Iron Mask" obviously a play on "The Man in the Iron Mask" which is a muskateers tale, then you should know up front its not to be taken to seriously as, im sure, the author expected. Its a Volo tale, and if youve learned anything about the realms volo is a way for TSR ( at the time) to get people familiar with the realms, so obviously anyone already into the realms would not be all that interested in books like "once around the realms"

with that said, its a Realms book, ive read it, actually kinda liked it, but i didnt pick it up expecting Dante's Inferno, i picked it up expecting it to be a loosely based remake of a old tale, and not to expect to much from it, so with expectations set at a resonable level i managed to enjoy the book.

sometimes i think peoples expectations for these books are WAYYYYY to high.

off soapbox....later

Well im a stinker for judging a book (initially!) by its cover (and also in this case, title). I never really got the urge to read this novel at all, I assume (maybe wrongly) that its based on the old "Man in the Iron Mask" tale? Its a shame if it does! The only book from the Nobles Series that ive read was Escape from Undermountain........which was ok.

So I guess this novel goes on the pile alongside Once Around the Realms then?!
