I agree... I would love to see a aware/unaware/semi-aware reincarnation system developed fully. The only thing like it in the Realms I've seen was from Secrets of the Magister.
Agreed. Among the "new" characters, he's the one I find most interesting, even far more interesting than Vasen, who's really just Cale and Abelar rolled into one. |

I agree that all the focus on planar beings is less interesting, at least to me, than just everyday people in fantastic situations. I think they decided to work planars into the mix as part of the demand for more PC races and it has just gone on and on.
That said, I've liked all (8? 9?) of Paul's "shadow books" and this is another in that series. If you haven't then you should start with the earliest ones... The books/characters/relationships all build on each other so you're missing a lot if you start with the newer ones. |

Far be it from me to criticize your taste, but you're making a mistake if you don't read the "Brimstone Angels" series. The writing is excellent, and the characters are all compelling. I would say the same of Paul Kemp's books. Both Evans and Kemp display very moving family interactions, as well as strong moral dilemmas.
I don't usually watch romance films, but when I step outside the box and try them, I occasionally find one that's beautiful. Neither Kemp nor Evans may wind up being your favorite writers in the Realms, but both are worth your time to try (at least 1 book each). |

Paul focuses more on the characters than he does their superficial uniqueness as extraplanar beings. You are really missing out if you skip his works on the basis of disliking extraplanar elements. |

Did you read the Neverwinter saga? I didn't, but I understand as much that Shade's troops played major roles in it. So . . .
Not really. He used shade beings and low level thayan underlings with a cameo of szass tam. But he really did not use shade troops in the manner we are accustomed to.
But with good reason. The big boys of shade and szass tam would wipe the floor with all the companions and jarlaxle's crew so it is counterproductive for them to get involved

I don't think Shadowfell is a dumb name. I think of fell in this usage as the adjective meaning "malevolent, sinister."
Did you read the Neverwinter saga? I didn't, but I understand as much that Shade's troops played major roles in it. So . . . |

Decided to pass on this book with the main character being part-shade. I didn't enjoy any of the shadowfell aspect (even the dumb name) of the recent Realms books, and was glad to see there wasn't too much of it in The Companions. |

I enjoyed it and I felt satisfied with the outcome. But I felt that it was really short. Did anyone else get that feeling? It probably could have gone another 2-3 chapters and fleshed out the story a bit more. |

I just finished it today. I felt the ending was a bit rushed, but as a whole, I really enjoyed it. I hope we get to see more of Vasen and company. |

I'd be honest, as I said, I generally don't mind spoilers. But that one (about the two Tanthul brothers) by jornan is one heck of a spoiler.
I'm taking my precious time reading this book. It's one of those books that have to be savored rather than fast-read.

Well, that makes it so much more exciting to start the book!  
Yeah, I thought the rule was usually to have a thread with Spoiler warns in the title, so I made one, but nobody is using it lol.
I also thought we were going to get a book club scroll opened by chapters the other day :( |
