You can skip the Sembia series and go straight to the Erevis Cale trilogy. But don’t read the Twilight War trilogy prior to EC as Paul alludes a lot of things (major spoilers) to his previous books—the fate of some key characters and even the ending. |

This is one of those "easy to read" and great series of the Realms. I loved them from the beginning to the end & am patiently waiting for the Sundering book. My reading order was :
Sembia: Gateway to the Realms, Book II - Shadow's Witness
Ereveis Cale Trilogy (Twilight Falling, Dawn of Night and Midnight's Mask) - [Which now has an omnibus edition I think]
Twilight War Trilogy (Shadowbred, Shadowstorm and Shadowrealm)
Hope you enjoy them, too. |

I read the Erevis Cale Trilogy, then the the Sembia novels, then the Twilight War. I would definitely read the Trilogy before the Twilight Ware. |

The saga of Erevis Cale is one of my favorites in the FR universe. I highly recommend it.
As for your question, yes you can skip directly to the Erevis Cale trilogy. The Sembia books are there only to provide you with some background information but are not that important to the overarching plot of the series. |

I, too, just started reading these novels. I decided to skip the Sembia book series (was hard to find, actually), and I had all of the Cale Trilogy books from the library.
Seriously, I really love these books.
I'm currently 2/3's of the way done with the second book of Twilight war, and I can't wait to finish it, and then anxiously await Kemp's Sundering novel.

I enjoyed it more with the Dragon magazines as background. Your call...I'm sure it'll work out. They are excellent books in their own right.

Agree with everything you've said, Thauranil. If you'd like to get more of a backstory, I would start with Dragon magazine #277 which is a short story detailing Cale's (no spoilers here) escape from Westgate. Dragon #297 then speaks to the chain of events between Twilight Falling and Shadow's Witness.
Both highly recommend IMO.

I never read the the first two lead-in stories, and I had no trouble at all following it. Paul is a master of his craft. |

Btw, what's the general opinion around here of the erevis cale trilogy?

After this is the Erevis Cale trilogy consisting of Twilight Falling, Dawn of Night and Midnight's Mask.
