Posted - 03 Jan 2012 : 08:21:09 I'm going on a holiday to South Australia in the first week of Feb and I'd like to start reading the Erevis Cale books on my Kindle while I'm down there, but I have no idea which ones to buy and what order to read them. Should I skip the books in the Sembia series and go straight to the Erevis Cale set, then read The Twilight War, or would I be missing vital background info? |

Wouldn't call it necessary, but I'd still recommend it. Partly because of its sheer awesomeness, but you also miss some core character development. Major plot details are sufficiently mentioned in the Twilight War trilogy and I don't think you'll miss much from a straight story standpoint in the long run, but I'm one of those people who is a firm believer in starting at the beginning and going completely in order. Definetly no real need to read the entire Sembia series (although most if it was pretty good. I liked the way it was set up, and only thought the Tazi and Tamlin books dragged) before Cale liike my OCD dictated I do (personally, I'd say start on Shadow's Witness, but you could easily skip that). |

I really enjoyed the Cale novel set in Sembia.
That said, I don't think it's necessary to read all the novels in the Sembia series if you're just interested in Cale, they almost stand alone (until the final novel).
So I'd pull out the Cale one and just read it by itself, then start on the other Cale novels. Good reads are good reads.

I personally really, really liked Shadow's Witness, and highly recommend reading it if you can find a copy. It is a good standalone novel apart from the rest of the Sembia series.
Shadow's Witness is also available for Kindle, so you could start there if you preferred, Spoon. I consider it the weakest of the Cale novels, though I still think it's a solid book. |

Spoon,
I typically recommend that readers start with the Erevis Cale Trilogy then go on to the Twilight War trilogy. I don't think that skipping the Sembia books would cause you to miss a beat.
Sweet! I'll pick them up in a week or so when I get a bit more money. Definitely look forward to reading them. I've always liked Mask and would love to learn more about him.
