I'm overseas working and have had heaps of time to read, so I started reading the Drizzt series about a month ago and am pretty hooked on them.
I've been reading in chronological order. At the moment I'm up to The Spine of the World. I know Servant of the Shard comes after that, but then I see that I can either go on and read Sea of Swords or possibly read The Promise of the Witch King and The Road to the Patriarch first.
Should I read The Witch King and Patriach ones first and then get back to Drizzt with Sea of Swords? I really like the characters of Entreri and Jarlaxle and I've seen that those two are actually before Sea of Swords in chronological order.
What do you guys think?

If i were you then i would just read the entire series twice...much better the second time around :) |

Yeah the Cleric Quintet fits in there too, since Cadderly is such an important character for Servant of the Shard and Ghost King. Those books are fantastic tho, so it's not really a chore. The omnibus of all 5 is relatively easy to find as well. |

All I would say is to make sure you read the Cleric Quintet before you read Passage to Dawn (Book IV of the Legacy of the Drow), and make sure you read the Sellswords Trilogy (including Servant of the Shard) before you read The Ghost King (Book III of the Transitions Trilogy). Other than that, I prefer to read them in chronological order (i.e. the Dark Elf Trilogy before the Icewind Dale Trilogy), but it is not necessarily necessary. I would also like to note that I am pretty sure that Servant of the Shard has officially been moved to the Sellswords Trilogy because it is a better fit there than as part of Paths of Darkness. |

I'm a big fan of reading books in publication order. I read Icewind Dale before The Dark Elf. I read Servant Of The Shard in between Spine Of The World and Sea Of Swords. Most of that is because I actually read them as they were released. But it makes more sense to me in terms of authors growing as writers, and the character development. |

I'd prefer the chronological order, just to keep things clear in my mind. And you already said that you really like Entreri & Jarlaxle, so there you go.
Be sure to get the related short stories, too, while you're at it. They tie in directly with the "The Sellswords" novels, nicely.
But it's totally your choice. Just realize that one avenue focuses on Drizzt, and one focuses on Entreri. |

Servant of the Shard is a fantastic book, but it really isn't a Drizzt book, it's book one of the Sellswords trilogy now.
I would keep going on with Sea of Swords and finish the Drizzt books, and stop at Orc King. Then go back and Read the 3 sell swords books together. Then move on to Orc King/Pirate King/Ghost King and then Gauntlgrym. |
