I'm about 2/3 of the way through Swordmage by Richard Baker and I have to say that it is really cool so far. There is a certain tone to the novel that feels like a fantasy novel twisted with a western. Hulburg and area feel very frontier-like, with propectors and merchants moving in a vying for power, and the powerful merchants taking over the laws and becoming the real rulers of the town.

The maine character Geran is a bit of a rogue and a loner (cowboy) and he comes back to his home town to find he doesn't like the state of things and who actually has the power. Reminds me of when the powerless sheriff needs someone to help him take back the town and defend the real citizens. There is even a dual in the city streets that feels very much like a draw between two cowboys.

There is also somewhat of a parallel with with some orc tribes and first nations people. I beleieve the orc cheif says something to the effect of "Hulburgans came to their lands and just took them and killed the orc people or drove them off. The orcs were there first. (I am by no means making a direct comparison with orcs and first nations people btw, I just noticed this one similarity).

Did anyone else notice this tone or know if it was perhaps intentional...or maybe I'm just out to lunch.

Definitly, I can easily see how it would parallel the whole Western style. I thought it was a mix between that and that movie Walking Tall where a guy comes back to find his home in need of a good cleaning. I need to read Avenger and Corsair though cuz Swordmage was the only book I read of his in a long while.
