Posted - 26 Mar 2010 : 12:56:37 Greetings.
Sorry about the topic name, but what i wanted to write didn't fit.
I have a few questions regarding the events between Servant of the Shard, and Promise of the Witch King.
I just started reading the book yesterday, and today out of nowhere, the item " Idalia's Flute " was mentioned on page 125. Something about Jarlaxle putting it into Entreri's hand.
Now, this got me thinking, i did some research, and i found out that a there was indeed a short story descriping the events prior to Promise Of the Witch king, called " That Curious Sword ".
1st question : Since i'm not about to buy a book, because of one short story, i was wondering if anyone could describe the events ( In short ) to me?
2nd question : I also noticed that there are two other short stories about Entreri and Jarlaxle, called " Empty Joys " and. When should i read them? After i'm done with the Sellswords, or should i perhaps have read them before?
Thanks! |

Posted - 27 Mar 2010 : 16:46:55 Alright guys. Thanks for clarifying that for me :)
I've read the short summaries, and have decided to continue on reading PotWK. I'll read the short stories ASAP, since i can't get enough of Entreri and Jarl'axle. |

Click the link in my sig for a complete chronological listing of RAS's Realms works, including the novels and short stories related to "The Sellswords" and the Bloodstone Lands.
It would probably have been best to have read the stories in chronological order, with the short stories in between SOTS and POTWK--if for no other reason, to avoid this present confusion.
The shorts are great if you like the snarky back-and-forth dialogue of these two characters, and a complete arc of their ongoing association/friendship.
"TCSh" is especially good for seeing how the guys made it to the Bloodstone Lands, and how Entreri encountered the shade figure Rorli, as these are recurring story elements for the rest of the "TSell" series.
"EJ" was pretty--well--empty, IMO. It continues the arc of these characters' friendship and lives as mercs, but nothing important really happens. I suppose you could say that Jarlaxle attempts to teach Entreri the value of enjoying the smaller things in life--"empty joys"--which could be viewed as a tie-in to the purpose of Idalia's flute. But it's a fairly forgettable story.
"WITN" leads directly into POTWK. In "WITN", Damara is experiencing a torrential downpour, and at the beginnning of POTWK, the ground is still completely muddy from all that rain. The dragon sisters introduced in "WITN" are still very closely involved in the guys' lives in the novel, too. This story is most important because it tells us more about the history and purpose of the flute, which is key to Entreri's character development in POTWK and ROTP.
But if you're content with just reading those summaries of the shorts, you should be alright with only buying the novels. |

Posted - 26 Mar 2010 : 15:37:11 We had that discussion before here at the Keep and IIRC Idalia's flute was not introduced in the short story That Curious Sword from the Realms of Shadows anthology but in the short story Wickless in the Nether found in Realms of the Dragons.
Anyhow, during the events of Wickless in the Nether Artemis and Jarlaxle get involved with Ilnezhara and her sister for the first time. Artemis ends up with the flute being handed to him at the end of the story.
You'll find a summary here. (Look for a post by 'BroodingLion' about 2/3 down the page marked with a spoiler warning or run a word-search for 'flute').
Hope that clarifies matters for you.
