I just finished Downshadow and I am looking at my Forgotten Realms bookshelf trying to decide what newer series to read next. What would you choose?

Last Mythal
Knights of Myth Drannor
Haunted Lands
Twilight War
Transitions
Blades of the Moonsea
Empryean Odyssey

I am interested in your thoughts/reviews/comments on many of the new series available in the Realms... Please: no spoilers.

Knights, for the reasons mentioned above. Also, Ed's books are usually pretty funny.

As for the Empyrean... is that any good?

I quite enjoyed the first book, but I've not read the second. I don't even know if the third is out...

November is the release date for the third book -- The Crystal Mountain.
Heh. Seems like I was operating from an old release schedule.

Flicking through the paperback of The Sword Never Sleeps earlier today, I noticed The Crystal Mountain now has a July release date.

Can you elaborate on this Thielan?

Well.. I've read Haunted Lands, Twilight War and Transition.. Now I'm reading Last Mythal.

So.. For those four I would recommend to you (on this order):
If you already read erevis cale trilogy and shadows witness, Twilight War is the best option. (my opinion)
If not, but you are a long RAS fan, try Transition...
If not, but you love Thay, Szass Tam or SpellPlague, try The Haunted Lands...
Well.. If you are not amazed with Thay, RAS and didn't read Erevis Cale Trilogy, you should try Last Mythal, I've read only 70 pages and it hooked me as I never were.

For the other books, all I could say is: If you loves Ed's books, like Sage and Faraer, handle it fast and don't stop reading. But I have an opinion similar to Wooly.

Twilight War is absolutely great! I liked the Erevis Cale Trilogy even a bit more.

Haunted Lands is also a good one.

To me, Kemp and Cunningham are the benchmark in the FR.

Twilight war. Last Mythal wasn't bad, but the Twilight war is the best realms trilogy I've read for a while.

I agree! She's an incredible writer.

I am currently reading The Last Mythal and am very impressed. I finished the first one this afternoon and immediately picked up the second.

I highly recommend it.

What about Falconfar: Darklord.

But out of that August list you provided, I would suggest Twilight War.

I'd go for the Knights also. And for Last Mythal... yeah. I'm not a fan, period. As for the Empyrean... is that any good?
Ashe Ravenheart Posted - 17 May 2009 : 02:45:30
I'd go with Knights myself as well. Twilight War was good too, but I don't think you have to read the other novels first (still haven't read them myself).
Firestorm Posted - 17 May 2009 : 01:38:34
The twilight war Trilogy.

However, if you have not read shadows witness and the Erevis Cale trilogy first, best do so.

IMO, the best 2 trilogies to have come from the realms in some time.
The Sage Posted - 17 May 2009 : 01:13:53
I'd have to say Ed's "Knights of Myth Drannor."

It's by Ed. 'Nuff said!
Faraer Posted - 17 May 2009 : 00:46:00
Knights of Myth Drannor by a long distance: I think it's by far the most central and important Realms fiction published yet.
Wooly Rupert Posted - 16 May 2009 : 22:57:09
Of the ones listed, I've only read two trilogies and the first book of another. The trilogies I've read are the Knights of Myth Drannor and the Last Mythal. I enjoyed both, but I'd have to go with Last Mythal -- much respect to Ed as a world-builder, but I'm not that big a fan of his fiction.
