Well met.

While I have enjoyed every FR novel I have ever read, I must admit that I am quite the novice compared to most here. I would have to guess that I have read less than 10% of the FR books.

Long ago a friend gave me a copy of Homeland. It was not my first FR book, but I was enthralled with Salvatores characters and writing style. Since then I have kept up with Drizzts story, and read many other FR novels. The only FR books I have read since finishing The Two Swords were the books in Shandrils Saga. You can imagine my suprise when I read the prelude of The Orc King. One hundred years have passed and apparently much of the face of Faerun has changed.

My question is this. What books chronicle these times? Do I need to read them before reading The Orc King? Will I enjoy The Orc King more if I just ride it out and enjoy the way Salvatore tells the story, or will I be totally lost?

I give you my thanks in advance for I am sure the knowledge garnered from the people here will be more than helpfull.

The upcoming trilogy of Bruce Cordell is supposed to explore at least partially the Spellplague events.

Snocone, I also recommend you perform a search here at Candlekeep for topics relating to "the Spellplague." At least then you'll have access to much of the information on the setting change that we currently have.

So far, none. As said before, the "Spellplague" heralds the advent of the 4E campaign setting, which will be out next month.

Go ahead and read The Orc King. Chances are that Salvatore will fill you in on all you need to know.

Nobody really knows a whole lot about Spellplague, as Wizards hasn't released the new setting yet. It shouldn't ruin your experience with The Orc King.

Glad you're enjoying Salvatore. He's the most successful realms writer ever . . .
