Hoo-boy... Short history lesson.
1st Edition D&D (Actually, it was Advanced Dungeons & Dragons) came out a long time ago. When the Realms was first published, it was during 1E.
Then came 2nd edition (still AD&D). Second edition was little more than a refinement of 1E. There were some changes -- most notably, some character classes were lost -- but it was not overt. Most 1E and 2E rules can be used almost interchangeably. Despite the fact that the rule changes were minor, we got a major event -- the Time of Troubles -- to explain the transition.
2E lasted for a good long while. In my opinion, it was the golden age of published Realmslore. But then came 3rd edition, and its sequel, 3.5.
3E (no longer AD&D, it was just D&D) was a very serious refinement of the rules. While a lot of the stuff was the same, just as much was changed -- and for the most part, they did improve the rule system.
Applying 3E to the Realms, however, caused a bucketload of changes -- which were never explained, or were very poorly explained, at best (an actual explanation was "It was always that way, but no one knew about it!"). 3.5 was a refinement of 3.0 rules, and didn't really change too much.
Though the rulesets changed, the lore was generally the same. Something written in the 1st edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Set (also known as the Old Grey Box) could readily be used in 2E or in 3.5E, with minor changes to whatever rules may have applied.
Now we have 4th edition. For better or worse, it is a radical change in rules. Much of the game has been totally redefined. Supporters praise its rule coherency and ease of play, while detractors complain about additional complexity and the overall feel of the game changing from being like a novel to being like an online game, such as World of Warcraft.
To bring the Realms to 4th Edition (and it is cynically speculated, by myself and others, that other reasoning is involved), they introduced a set of catastrophic changes that are quite literally reshaping the face of the Realms. On top of this (as if this wasn't offense enough to many of us), they are moving the timeline forward a full 100 years. So the Realms of 4E will essentially be something totally new, built upon something many of us were very familiar with and already quite happy with.
To the best of my knowledge, none of the novels currently in print happen in 1479 -- the year of the new setting. Most of the existing novels range from about 1356 to 1375. And since novels deal with lore, and not rules (also called crunch), it's quite easy to read any existing novel, without any knowledge of the game.
Some of my fave novels were published either late in the time of 1E, or well into 2E. But there are some among the 3E timeframe that I thoroughly enjoy, too.
So basically, this has been a very long-winded way of saying don't worry about the rules -- if you're reading the novels, just enjoy them.  |

yeah....i was going out on a limb there. Everyone was talking about 4th ed. so i figured there was a 1st 2nd and 3rd.....just ignore the question . haha ..

It's on .....how much??? haha I hope i won't . It's due at the library by noon tomoorrow! I need to finish it .... Anyway hey does it matter if you go back and forth between 2nd ed. and 3rd? just curious! thanks for caring !
