I keep thinking a few years ago, I read a short story that described what it was like inside a citadel when the flying citadels of Netheril fell. Perhaps Realms of Magic? All my FR novels are packed so I can't check. Could someone advise if they remember please? Thanks in advance.

Hmm, this sounds like something worth reading into.

That's the one I was referring to. It centers around the leader of an (griffon? giant eagle? I forget)aerial attack on another enclave, and when the city begins to fall he thinks that someone destroyed the mythallar, which was against all the rules of Netherese in-fighting.

The Realms of the Arcane tale deals with the fall of Netheril, although it is more of an observation of the events rather than a look at Karsus and how it all came about.

According to my notes, there is a story about the Fall of Netheril in Realms of the Arcane...this might be the one you are referring to.

Gotta look up Realms of Shadow to find the right story....of course I don't have my books at work with me (too bad).

It was in REALMS OF SHADOW.

There was a Netheril trilogy, and the second book took place at the time of the Fall. One of the protagonists was an impromtu apprentice of Karsus as he tried to get back to his own time (the first book was a few centuries before the Fall). At the end of the book you see Karsus casting his 12th level spell and all the cities falling.

But I think the story you're thinking is a short story from Realms of the Arcane, detailing an attack by the aerial forces of one enclave on another one just as the Fall happens. I don't have that book any more, however, so I can't give you the title.

there was an arcane age trilogy that covered a bit of Netheril. I believe (it has been many years since I looked at them) covered a fall of one of the cities.

Pretty sure it is Realms of Shadow, but the specifics aren't quite clear in my head right now. I am however working on the effects of the fall as it pertained to Anauria Enclave, which survived, for the Candlekeep Compendium, but a sudden fall that slows down safely isn't as exciting as one that kills most of the inhabitants

It certainly was NOT in 'Realms of Magic' as I have read that novel rather recently and cannot recall any such short story in it! Than again my brain has several and severe leaks sometimes...

I think it is Realms of Shadow, and there the story Too long in the dark, by Paul S. Kemp. But the story appears to have some details which are not canon, e. g. that Shade went to the plane of shadow the moment Mystryl died.
