Posted - 07 Feb 2008 : 17:54:48 Hi, I just finished reading the Cloak of Shadows (i've already read the Avatar series and Shadows of Doom) and I got quite confused on the order of events concerning Mystra, El, The Chosen and Midnight. Could anyone enlighten me in this? |

Ed Greenwood was right, the other trilogy was wrong?
Don't take that seriously, I was just shooting from the hip, so to speak. Welcome to Candlekeep! |

Posted - 05 May 2008 : 12:09:44 Hi
I have just ,after 14 years reread the avatar trilogy , in just under 5 days , again captivated by the epic saga that left a print on the realms for many years after. It is actually the reason why i registered to this candlekeep forum, (ofcourse having read the Cleric quintet i value the idea of Candlekeep highly.)
After finishing the avatar trilogy and sadly not having read the trials of cyric yet , (its on my to buy list for this month for sure though) i went straight to my brothers house and got the shadow of the avatar trilogy lying in his Forgotten realms library, which is prob 10-12 years ago since last i read it.
What struck me with wonder after reading the first few chapters and made me look fer answers online was the following...
Elminster loses his magic, due to the shard of Mystras divinity he safeguards.
But in the avatar trilogy , elminster repeatedly uses magic. or so it seems
HE teleported to midnight , when midnight had cast a most powerfull spell very dangerous to the realms, he dispels her spell and after giving her a reprimand teleports back(or so it seemed to me )
He helps in destroying the celestial bridge , and miscasts a spell against bane ,right beofre he plummets into the vortex , from which the magic elemental came.
HE runs around in tantras disguised through magic , and uses a charm spell there against followers of Torm.
He gets in waterdeep before Midnight and closes the portal from which Myrkuls denizens came from.
What is the explanation to this seemingly contradiction.
Is maybe someone else posing as Elminster in the avatar trilogy, so as to create an illusion of a still powerfull elminster?
Maybe i should read all three shadow of the avatar books before i post but my curiosity just got the upside hand on me
most curiosumly awaiting the replys of the Sages and Savants

Posted - 12 Feb 2008 : 17:03:42 Midnight meets Elminster in chapters 11 and 12 of Cloak of Shadows, a few days after Mystra placed much of her essence in her. The climax of Shadowdale takes place during All Shadows Fled. The dating in the Shadow of the Avatar novels matches that for the Avatar novels given in The Forgotten Realms Atlas. |

Posted - 10 Feb 2008 : 05:12:15 The way I read it (and I'm assuming you're referring to the section where she says "I'm called Midnight, but you can call me... Mystra.") is that Mystra's essence sort of took over Midnight for a little while during the middle of the Time of Troubles. To prevent things from going haywire, Ao stepped in and made Midnight forget that series of events (which is why it doesn't show up in the Avatar books), and sent El to deal with the Thayan golem.
I think, anyway. It's been a while since I've read those books, and they're in storage at the moment, so I can't check. |
