Posted - 19 Feb 2007 : 06:33:37 I found the article generally interesting. One thing I noted was the cover said "6 Forgotten Realms Outsiders" while the actually article and table of contents said four. I'm curious, was the cover a typo or were two outsiders cut from the article? |

Posted - 02 Mar 2007 : 17:29:35 PDK, when I chose the summon monster levels for them, I compared them to the existing monsters checking against both HD and CR. If you check those two factors, you have a pretty good set of criteria. That said, I can't recall if any were changed in the editing stage, but I don't think so. There's always planar ally.... |

First, Brian you deserve all the accolades you get, and as for your question, a bit of both. I think I was more focused on making them jive with Oghma, but it also made sense that they might be a bit more flexible in their interpretation of the Words. While I think its fine that most fiends and celestials of the Great Wheel are a single alignment as they tend to come from single aligned planes (and not the in between planes), I didn't think the Great Tree should constrain us in the same way.
Thank you. And thanks for the answer, too.
I agree that the hard and fast 'plane of origin denotes unwavering alignment' rule shouldn't apply as much to the Realms (which have far more shades of gray than other settings' cosmologies) as it does in the Great Wheel. Just good to see some of that seep into print. |

Posted - 28 Feb 2007 : 23:13:26 Tom: ref the choirs...
What is the logic behind Summon Monster IX? they're not 'damage-dealers', and Summon Monster is in rounds per level methinks (don't have the books in front of me...)
As I said, they're insanely powerful in terms of creation abilities, incorporealness, bardic music, etc. But Summon Monster IX? dang! I want to call on them EARLIER than that!!!
Any detail, fluff, 'special effects' (i.e. FX - audio or visual) comes to mind when summoning them? initial attitude? and what about planar binding spells, gate spells, or others? What kind of petitioner can ever achieved to become one!!!

Now, now, let's not hijack the thread. While I appreciate any and all goodwill from my fellow scribes, Tom's article deserves attention--as, I think, does each article in the Volo's series. If we're going to convince Paizo to keep them up, we should keep talking about them all, in a positive light (and be sure they know we're being positive!).
Personally, I thought the most interesting item of note in the Outsiders article was that the harmonious choirs, both as celestials and as employers of the Words of Creation, could occasionally be true neutral. Was this a "sometimes good is necessary to preserve the balance" commentary, Tom, or simply tying the choir more definitively with Oghma and his role as keeper of creative knowledge?
The choirs are incredible... and I found myself immediately wanting to PLAY one as a PC... However, Summon Monster IX? really? that is a steep cost, but I'll agree that they can perform a variety of very useful services...

I agree. Let's start a "Ask Brian Cortijo" thread, and Brian: write a dang book with Garen Thal as the main character... (he is/was one of your favorite PCs right? )

Alas, I didn't write the article on undead in #352, but I hope you like the outsiders. And George, I think I got paid for 6, but I haven't figure it out. ;-)
I think GarenThal wrote the undead article in #352, as he replied to one of my questions directly when I asked it on the Ed Greenwood thread... (i.e. he told me that the 'Create Spawn' ability works for victims killed with the 'Drowning Grapple' ability, not with the erroneously mentioned 'Energy Drain' ability, which the Skuz does not possess in its current 3.5 form -- the creature 'did' have the ability in 2nd edition, but no more) |

*Ahem* it seems that my eyesight and memory are getting worse each year... but don't tell Alaundo, or he'll assign me to cleaning the cellars for the rest of my life! I can still serve as a scribe, I swear it by Oghma and Deneir!
Anyway, I am still eagerly waiting for this article! |

I submitted 6 or 8 to Dragon some time ago. They ended up having space for 4, though I think they originally thought they'd have space for 6 and then 5 (as the article also mentions the black beasts of bedlam). I don't know if the others will see print or not.
Wow, I am really waiting for this, since liked your undead in Dragon #352!
Especially the Inquisitor - it brought back GREAT memories (both as a player and the DM ;) |
