First off, if this would fit better under FR products, by all means, whisk this thread off to the correct forum. Secondly, this thread will be discussing alterations to a published adventure and will contain spoilers, so those not wishing to be spoiled please don't read any further, or read further at your own risk. Thank you.

With that out of the way, I would appreciate some help from the sages here at Candlekeep regarding the FR 3.5 adventure Sons of Gruumsh, specifically moving the setting away from Melvaunt to the Sword Coast north of Waterdeep, as the party I GM for resides in Waterdeep and changing the setup of the adventure to jive with published lore.

OK, so here's what I have worked out so far:

1.) The noble families will all have to be changed to appropriate Waterdhavians. Lord Nanther and the Nather family will be switched out to the Brossfeather family and Orbul Brossfeather. Oreal Nanther changed to Pol Brossfeather. That was the easy part.

The hard part is that I have yet to read the novel Waterdeep and so I'm not up to date on all the noble alliances/disagreements, so the other houses need to be converted and have it make sense. Seeing as there are seventy odd noble houses, the sheer dynamic is daunting. I'm thinking about switching House Bruil with the Gundwynd family and House Marsk with the Cragsmere family.

The other houses I'm stymied with (though I could change the above without really any effort).

2.) The end betrayal of Bremen Leiyraghon will of course have to take place in the respective families' Hunting Lodge outside of Waterdeep to cut off watch aid or magical assitance, along with not raising questions about the pack of fully armed Orcs that jump the party. Also, the motivation for Bremen's stand-in will have to be completly changed, instead of getting to rule the city, he simply moves straight into the role of patriarch that much sooner.

Any help on working out the noble families and the web of intrigue between said families would be greatly appreciated, as the rest of the adventure should play out pretty much by the book.

Just for the record, here's the official changes I made, in case anyone cares:

I cut out the Lord of Keys all together, as I didn't feel he was needed.
Lord Nanther changed into Orbul Brossfeather.
Oreal Nanther changed to Pol Brossfeather.
Argens Bruil to Argens Gundwynd.
Kalman Leiyraghon to Gerath Zulphair.
Elaint Marsk to Elaint Cragsmere.
Kara Calaundra to Kara Dezlentyr, also changer her to human.


The Zulphair's play a prominent role in one of my player's PC's background, so I decided to use them as the boogie men. The rest were chosen after studying what each family was involved with, etc.

I also invited the fact the Brossfeather's own a mansion two days ride north of the city, which is were Pol was last seen.

This afternoon, they start the invasion of the citadel, which I set in the mountain range directly north of Waterdeep (sorry, I forget the name, and don't have my maps with me.)

As Kuje said... the novel itself doesn't really provide an in-depth account of the current relationships and petty squabbles between the various noble families at play in the City of Splendors. The few families and high-ups that do receive attention however could be enough to provide you with a basic interpretation of how nobles relate with each other in Waterdeep... enough for you to expand upon it on your own for the adventure (or incidently... using the noble family details covered in the various sourcebooks about Waterdeep itself).

Well.

The Waterdeep novel doesn't have much interaction between the rest of the nobles except between a handful.

I don't know much about the module. I bought it but never really read it. :) I could go through it and think of ideas.

However, here's some ideas that I just thought of:

One noble family has a item that another noble family wants returned. To get it back, the family hires the same thief that originally stole it. Maybe the thief is a good actor who enjoys working a servant, etc, in the nobles houses and playing them off each other. Or maybe it's a doppleganger who has taken on those roles.

That's all I got right now. I might have more when I look through that module.

You could check out Wooly's and my Hooks in the Compendiums. There might be some ideas you could use from them.
