Court intrigue: Waring Dukes picking sides between Gareth and Ree
Battlefield: Potential Civil war over 2 differing views of Damaras future
Merchantile rivialry over Damaras Bloodstone Mines
Damara had it all

Let me speak from experience on this matter. Yes, it does make for a very interesting campaign. My only regret is that I didn't start it a few years more before the Time of Troubles to give the players the background on the war with the Zhengyi (I had them joining the army in the last few months of the war). Luckily, my players (except one who was very good about not looking up things, but had an idea of the history) didn't really know the history of the area that well (since it hasn't been the focus of many novels). I had the players find about the betrayal with the fake wand by the king's advisor at the river that ended the war, but they couldn't get to him in time because Zhengyi's servants were harrying them (and they were low level, so they couldn't just teleport, etc...). They were betrayed by Dimian Ree (whom I had turn to Zhengyi on the night of all the assassinations of nobles), got involved with the twilight riders, had to contend with Baroness Sylvia. Very fun. I had a whole subplot thing going with Velsharoon (prior to his ascendance), and I was about to start bringing in the dragons who settled around Castle Perilous. The amount of prep time I was having to do for the campaign was growing heavy at that point, so we started an alt campaign and rotated between the two. Then hurricane Katrina struck. That tore apart a bunch of stuff, but we've finally started getting back together again (had our first game about 2 weeks ago). This time they felt like doing some underdark stuff, so we shelved the Damara campaign. Someday though. I'd really like to redo it again if I ever do another campaign after my current, but place the players in different areas. Have the players work their way up through the army ranks over years of battle with Zhengyi. I really doubt they'd remember the beginning where the king died, so maybe he can be less of a faceless entity. Maybe they could really feel the pain when the flower of Damara's nobility is assassinated (and the player's would probably actually WANT to hunt down the citadel of assassins). It could go an entirely different way. |

Well, they've given you Unther and Mulhorand now. Not to mention Cormyr. Still lots of places to run "Power of Faerūn"-type campaigns.

yeah but Damara had it all just about all the stuff in PoF could have been used in a Damaran campaign
Besides theres not alot on the Old Empires and most of the stuff in FR10 is now been invalidated

Posted - 04 Apr 2006 : 05:37:08 As long as you have the Knights of The Shield, Tethyr is an open hothouse of chaos and politicking. :) |

Posted - 04 Apr 2006 : 01:14:49 And Tethyr hasn't been reclaimed all that long... I'd imagine there's still some jockeying for position going on. Maybe not a lot, but some -- because even when you use a former government as a foundation, there's still lots of things to deal with in forming a new one. |

That's right... The Reclamation Wars "end" in 1369 DR. That's before 3e FR.

Yeah they shut down Tethyr as well which would have been another great location |
