What old issues of Dragon and Dungeon are worth getting for the FR articles?
Im defining "worth" as meaning the relevant issue of Dungeon/Dragon contains useful realms lore that hasnt been published else where ie in a source book etc.
So my fellow scribes what are your opinions? Whats worth getting?
(Ive only started buying Dungeon/Dragon magazine since 3ed) |

Posted - 17 Mar 2005 : 23:45:01 Had to buy Dungeon 121 separate. Then I got a charge of $11.00 for shipping and handling. Ah well, a fool and his money are soon parted, but heck, I'm sure over the past 20 years I've fed Mr. Greenwood and others a few meals from buying most of their books.
Speaking of which... I really need to add a library onto the house... or the wife's gonna kill me dead. |

For a year subscription it's $50??? How much of a discount off newstand is that price? |

Posted - 17 Mar 2005 : 22:10:58 Heh, I just ordered Dungeon 121 for the adventure in the Archwood. Sadly enough, I also dropped a years subscription price based on the rumor a certain FR author has a three-part adventure starting on or about issue 124. Hrm... yep, that's enough for them to get fitty buckeroos from me.
I really am pathetic sometimes. |

Yeah Ive already got Dungeon 73 Eric (and the other 4 modules of the Mere)
I dont suppose you managed to stick any stuff about the Mere into the Waterdeep source book? Specficly any of the sites in the 5 modules?
Sorry, no room.

Posted - 17 Mar 2005 : 17:58:39 I can recommend Dungeon #103, as it contains an adventure set in the Silver Marches for four Charakters level 5 (easily scalable). "Forest of Blood" is a mix of urban information gathering and wilderness tracking/exploration, involving druids and the People of the Black Blood. There is some hint given in the background section about a Chosen of Malar, named Anth-Malar, whose goal is to wage total war on the cities of the Silver Marches.
Also, Dungeon #114 contains a very cool little Level 1 adventure called "Mad God's Key". It's set in Greyhawk, but I could change it to fit into the FR (Everlund) very easily (scaled up for lvl 2-3 PCs)...Just changed some gods, location names and modified it to fit perfectly into Realms canon/history.
I have an old Dungeon issue with an adventure set in Damara, involving a steel dragon but I don't have it available now. Have to check in 2 weeks what else I have flying around in my parents cellar |

No idea if this news will affect your decision, especially given the lack of details. However, I found the following information over at GamingReport.Com
quote:
Paizo is announcing the release of two hard cover books this year...
The other hard cover volume is The Dragon Compendium: Volume 1, a collection of the best articles from the Dragon magazine over its complete 29 year run. Proven favorites as selected by former editors-in-chief and fans fill out this 256 page book, offering a variety of game material for the current rule set and older reference materials for readers.
I'm curious to see what editors and fans choose. If this sucks, I blame those scribes who selected the material. |

Posted - 16 Mar 2005 : 20:46:57 #69 and #73 surely are. "Irongard" is in #18, a neat little stonedelve in the Stonelands. "Elminster's Back Door" in #30 is a curiosity in that it's only 'useful' for PCs stupid enough to try to break into Elminster's tower. "The Whistling Skeleton", a roadside encounter, is in Dragon #200. I quite like Paul Culotta's adventures, but can't recommend them so unreservedly. Jeff Grubb's "Playing with Fire" in Dungeon #82 is worth looking at: not set in the Realms, but more Realmslike than many adventures that are.
As to future issues of Dungeon, #121 reveals that Eric's forthcoming trio is about... the Dungeon of the Crypt, the other big dungeon beneath Waterdeep! I wonder how much it's based on Ed's notes (and also, I confess, whether my repeated mention of it has anything to do with the choice). |

I'm a little biased, but I think Dungeon #69 and Dungeon #73 are worth getting. ;-) I'm sure someone online has an index of FR adventures in Dungeon. I know Ed wrote two ... Ironguard and Elminster's Back Door. Ed wrote another one, "The Whistling Skeleton" for Dragon or a Dragon annual (can't recall which). There's a "fourth Desert of Desolation" adventure (tied to the modules, not to the Realms). Oh, anything by Paul Culotta is usually well integrated into the Realms ... he did some set in the Pirate Isles and some set in Lantharl's Lantern (north of BG).

I imagine the Dragon Cdrom will be hard to find
Honestly, I don't know... I've never looked for a price on it. But I do know that the FR Interactive Atlas commands a hefty price, so I'd imagine that the Archive does, as well. |

I found a list of the articles but it isnt what I want as the material in some of those FR articles have been reprinted in books I already have or the material in the Dragon article has been superceded some where |

If you can find the Dragon Magazine CD-Rom, then I'd go for that first up.
Yeah, I was going to mention that one, too, but Krash beat me to it. That Archive is invaluable -- issues 1-250 of Dragon, all in pdf, and copies of Dragon's older brother The Strategic Review.
'Tis very sad, but I know of no plans to update it. |

Posted - 14 Mar 2005 : 23:06:17 I imagine it would depend on what does and doesn't grab you. Everyone's interested in something else...
Allow me to direct you to The DragonDex, an up-to-date index of all of the articles in Dragon. That should help you figure out ones you want. |

Posted - 14 Mar 2005 : 22:56:23 If you can find the Dragon Magazine CD-Rom, then I'd go for that first up. Ed's Wyrms of the North articles have been reprinted on the WotC website and most of the rest have been since 3E or close to it, so find that CD-Rom!
Dungeon is a bit harder. The two adventures (to date) from Eric Boyd - "Sleep of Ages" and "Eye of Myrkul" are excellent as was Rich Baker's "Prison of the Flamebringer" (that one was 3E though and you may have it). Ed did a few, smaller adventures in earlier issues but none of them have what I would consider to be essential realmslore. Nice to have all the same. Other FR adventures were all pretty decent but I'll leave it to others to provide info re their utility game and FR-wise.
