Posted - 30 Aug 2002 : 14:17:01 Well i finally got my hands on Silver Marches and i love it! Its a very well designed book packed with useful information. Ill definatly be wanting to run a campaign in that region now.
So what would you like to see covered in the next regional sourcebook? I really dont think its necessary to cover areas which we already have products for, such as Amn and Tethyr in "Lands of Intrigue" and also areas like Waterdeep, Cormyr and the Dalelands have had plenty coverage (especially Waterdeep!!) and IMO doesnt warrant a new product.
I personally would like to see something for the Border Kingdoms or maybe something for all the islands like Lantan, Nimbral etc.
Whats your preference?

Posted - 25 Apr 2003 : 11:46:37 I suspect that one of the reasons for detailing the Unapproachable East was to further explore the Red Wizards of Thay. We know from people like Sean Reynolds that a deliberate effort was made with the FRCS and 3e to "smart up" the Red Wizards and make them a credible and pervasive influence (and threat). IMO Wizards has done this very well.
Now, if the Unapproachable East contains some good Realmslore detailing the current political factions in Thay, their leaders and plans, how Szass Tam is bringing them together, and so forth, then that would be a good thing because it would give DMs material to use when playing Red Wizard enclaves and agents elsewhere in Faerun - and give the product greater appeal. Including places like Rasheman and Aglarond in the product details local powers opposed to the Red Wizards who might act as a break on their plans - which would also have a filter through effect elsewhere in Faerun.
As for what I would like to see in the future. I would like to see (gasp) new product dealing with the Dalelands and Cormyr. If we have places that a *lot* of campaigns are run in, then it only makes commercial sense to detail them, including recent events. Much has happened in Cormyr and much is also happening in the Dales (the resurgence of the drow, the end of the Retreat, new Zhent politics after the Manshoon Wars, new Harper politics after the schism with Khelben, and so forth). While I know that a lot of 2E material exists this is not going to satisfy new gamers nor attract more new ones to these very popular areas - and Wizards cannot survive forever by not focusing on expanding their market base. Telling new gamers that these areas are very popular but they have to use out of date material to flesh them out probably won't cut it.
Tying in Sembia to a Dales / Cormyr product seems to make good commercial sense given the popularity of the Sembia novels.
The Silver Marches was an excellent choice IMO and the Underdark book ties in with the Drow emphasis of this year, complimenting other products. I wait to see how the Unapproachable East fits into the mix. |

Posted - 24 Jan 2003 : 16:44:30 I wouldn't be surprised if references to Sossal and Narfell would be in the Unapproachable East product. The lands more or less border said region.
I must say that personally for me these area's are covered enough in the FRCS. In current realms-time they have nothing much to offer. Their moment of glory is further down the past. I believe there are not many campaigns around which play in Faerun's history (yes zemd, I know your re-living the fall of Myth Drannor )
The above makes it very unlikely for a company to create a product about these regionss, it would sell to die-hard FR fans, but not necessarily to the masses... and that's where they make their money...
As far as other regions go... mixing the old Vilhon Reach product with the Arnaden region and the Border Kingdoms could IMO conceiveably be a product which would appeal to the masses... though some events tying in to Novels or major 'happenings' in Faerun would probably be necessary to generate enough interest. |

Hi kahonen, hows things? Nice to see you back on the forum, its been a lonnnnng time
I guess that WotC always prefer to stick with popular and more well known locations for their FR products. Products based in Cormyr, Dalelands etc. will (maybe only in their eyes) appeal more than products on Mhair or Sossal or whatever. |

Hi Rad, how are you doing?
I've said similar things to that so many times it's frightening. Do you think Hasbro know this and hope that it continues? |

Posted - 03 Dec 2002 : 20:51:05 To be honest, Im not particulary bothered about the new Unapproachable East sourcebook..... the 2nd edition product Spellbound: Thay, Rashemen and Aglarond is good enough for me! Im not really interested in seeing yet more Cormyr\Dalelands books either. Lets see something NEW, something that hasnt been covered before.

I really am surprised that the Dales, Waterdeep, Cormyr, Lands of Intrigue, or even Sembia were not chosen as the next regional book. I've played in FR since the start of 2nd edition and I have never played anywhere in the Unapproachable East. I honestly have no desire to buy this book and won't be doing so.
Thus, I'm just wondering, am I in the minority? Do others play in the Unapproachable East area more than I have seen detailed on any messageboard? |

Posted - 03 Dec 2002 : 17:56:22 The Spine of the World gets some coverage in the Silver Marches sourcebook - perhaps not as much as people would like, but since there's a lot of wilderness and 'empty' space, it is most likely not a commercially interesting region to detail.

I totally agree! Although TSR said back in the days of the "old grey box" that Sembia would never be detailed as it would be a blank canvas for the DM to expand, following the Sembia series of novels, I think it would be great to see a Sembia sourcebook!

Now that would be excellent! I love the forests of the Realms, they are so varied and interesting (more than many people realise!), and having a sourcebook of them all would be great! Ive also been wishing for a sourcebook detailing all islands of the Realms, not just major island but all the smaller ones that many people overlook.

Posted - 03 Dec 2002 : 00:29:49 I found the information below over at the Gaming Report's website:
Updated Wizards of the Coast 2003 Releases Posted 2002-12-02 10:33:14 by damonwhite
Damon White Reports: GamingReport received a new list of Wizards of the Coast releases for 2003. Further details on each are coming.
D&D Forgotten Realms: "Unapproachable East" HardCover - $29.95
d20 Modern: "Urban Arcana" HardCover - $39.95
Novels:
Forgotten Realms: "Condemnation" Hardback - $24.95
Plague of Ice - $5.99
DragonLance: Warriors Journey - $6.99
Forgotten Realms: "Shadowdale" - $6.99
**
Thus, the rumors of the Unapproachable East being the next regional supplement are becoming fact.
I personally would have enjoyed another area being covered especially Sembia since I'm enjoying the novel series right now a great deal. However, to those wanting the East to get some detail, I hope they are happy with the product.

Posted - 08 Nov 2002 : 11:26:37 In a way I agree with Rad on not detailing regions extensively covered in the previous addition. However, I wouldn't mind a 3e regional sourcebook on the Lands of Intrigue and Calimshan.
If I had to pick something, it would be a combination of historical and current: The Dwarven empire of Shanatar and its sole survivor state Iltkazar.
The tie-inns with the region (Amn, Tethyr, Calimshan) have been hinted at and to some degree detailed in Lands of Intrigue and Drizzt's Guide to the Underdark, however there is no 'complete' work on the pinnacle of Dwarven history. The Great Rift in all its splendor, pales in comparisson to what the Shield Dwarves established under the region also known as Empires of the Sands.
Steven Schend would be my favorite author for such a book. |

Posted - 30 Aug 2002 : 17:20:00 I would just love to see details on the Ruins of Dragonspear and the High Moor area. Most every campaign I have run went through with that area at one time or another. Id be willing to kill to have details on Myrloch's Crypt. Now theres a bad guy that could seriously challenge the old mage of Shadowdale.

Posted - 30 Aug 2002 : 16:07:21 Sembia or Cormyr. Sembia has never been detailed before. Cormyr, though detailed before, has gone through a lot, with the war and all. Also, it is a central point of the Realms, and many campaigns are located there. A 3E update would do it good. Actually, Amn wouldn't hurt, either. It is in dire need of detailing after the Sythillisian War.
