I just discovered TSR 1167. It includes a readers digest version of the 2nd Ed. Rulebooks, and four mini-adventures set in and around the region of Shadowdale.
The Tomb of Damara, The Town of Freedale, The Ghost of Harrow Hill, Under Mount Dread...
It blows my mind I never knew about this. |

As I said - some of the "lore" is directly in opposition to canon - but when did that ever stop TSR or WOTC. Most can be relatively easily explained away, either by adjusting names or changing dates... make "King" Damara predate the Dalereckoning, maybe someone who tried to carve a kingdom out of Cormanthor and was part of the Crown/Scepter wars. "High Wizard Netheril" is a poser who is obsessed with the Netherese. Etc.
As a product, it is best compared to the other old introductory boxed sets:
The classic Dungeon&Dragons Game - the one where you learned to play step by step as you made your way through Zanzer Tem's dungeon.
The Dragon's Den
The Goblin's Lair
The Haunted Tower
All these were box set games, with full poster size dungeon maps that were set in "Thunder Rift" and trained beginners to play D&D.
This is the same idea, only its AD&D 2nd Ed. and set in the area of Shadowdale.
I'd also kind of compare it to the Castles Box set, which took the idea of Darkhold and made it something it hadn't been.
Still hate the design of Darkhold they made... taking the great description from the OGB and basically throwing it right out the window... only to have it brought back in the Player's Guide... then out again... on and on :P |

Yeah, that was me who asked Ed about Freedale. Haven't used it in a campaign yet, but it's in my toolbox now, at least.
As far as I can tell, Introduction to Advanced Dungeons & Dragons hasn't been made available in PDF form through DMsGuild/DriveThruRPG. It's an interesting enough piece of apocrypha, but I wouldn't say it's worth the price it's selling for in online shops for anyone but the most free income-having, die-hard collectors. |

The wizard Netheril is one thing, but that's not as problematic history-wise as this:
"The characters leam from the scroll Netheril
gave to the wizard that Damara was a great
king who ruled with the power of the [orb of dragonkind].
Twenty years ago an ogre named Bonegnasher
attacked the castle in search of the orb, killing
Damara's troops. As a last act, Damara hid the orb
somewhere in the castle. Bonegnasher has been
searching for it ever since."
Note that the Tomb of Damara is deep in the woods south of Shadowdale according to the map. King of what exactly??? |

Well, obviously the wizard Netheril is famously known for his adventures with the elven twins Cormanthyr and Myth Drannor, the priestess Silverymoon, and the rogue Shadowdale. |

Haha, appparently TSR1167 Tome of Treasure is an incorrect entry in my spreadsheet. "Tome of Treasure" led me to this page describing TSR1105 First Quest. My mistake, I apologize, I honestly have no clue how or why this error happened, I hope there's no other errors on my list. |

The only "Tome" books I know of are Tome of Magic (2E), Tome of Magic (3E), Tome of Battle: The Book of Nine Swords, and Mordankainen's Tome of Foes. What is Tome of Treasure? |

Not a lot. And some a bit contradictory to other Realms sources.
Totally introduction to playing AD&D type stuff. A couple NPCs. A new mountain name. A castle and a dungeon. |
