Take a look at this years FR releases! Not much at all! Next year theres only mention of "Races of Faerun" so far (novels aside!). How do you feel about this? Personally im not happy about it at all, this is the way that Dragonlance, in TSR's reign, ended up.... products got fewer and fewer and in the end it was purely a novel line. Im not saying that will happen to FR but id like to see a lot more products being releasd.

Take Ravenloft for example. Recently relaunched by White Wolf, they have had more product releases this year than we will get for FR in two years! The line-up of Ravenloft products for next year (up to June) is, IIRC, 4 products! I used to love Ravenloft and its rebirth came as a great joy to me (FR is still number one though!) and the products are of pretty good quality. I wish WotC would produce more FR thoughout the year and promote it more

Indeed you are lucky William, imagine paying the costs of shipping and handling to Aust... probably twice the weight of the book or crate. Although I do have a contact in the shipping industry who would give me a good deal but the FR books he's likely to come across written in english are about as close to nil.

Yes,Lucky is my middle name...no my dogs middle name.
I love where I live indeed Lina.

That's right William.

Lina, I know of nearly every single gaming and hobby store that this 'great continent' has, having at one time or another had reason to contact them. Just let me know of your current city and state, and I'll see what I have...that is, if you cannot find anything on your own.

That is bad,I guess I don't realize how lucky I am sometime.I may live

than a week to 10 days by mail.
I'm sorry Lina."Sage of Perth" lives on your great continent he may know great sources in your area.

William:
I know how that is!!! About 30 miles into another state for me to nearest AD&D book store.

That's okay. I was just referring to what was already on the scroll.

It's been a while since I read Silver Marches.

Bookwyrm Posted - 13 Jul 2003 : 15:48:23
I'm surprised you thought I made her up. Guess I'm not the only one the absent-minded demon is plaguing, since we got on to this off-topic dicussion because I used her as an example of the change between 2- and 3e.

She's detailed on page 64 of The Silver Marches. She's also on page 176 of Volo's Guide to the North, though it's really just in passing.

The latter book was the only resource on Silverymoon I had when I started making the character, so I based a lot of it on that. I changed a lot when I got The Silver Marches, but that's how it started.

Bookwyrm, from where did the name Xara originate, for this character?.

Bookwyrm Posted - 13 Jul 2003 : 11:14:41
By the way, Xara is a human, not a half-elf.
Bookwyrm Posted - 13 Jul 2003 : 11:12:15
Indeed, sometimes I have to wonder about my own sister . . . .
The Sage Posted - 13 Jul 2003 : 07:16:09
You can never be to sure .

Mournblade Posted - 13 Jul 2003 : 02:28:16
I think Xara is just a Neutral Evil Half-elf. I don't think she is an Erinyes. Not every evil female is a vile temptress from the lower planes
The Sage Posted - 12 Jul 2003 : 10:16:59
That may be true, however you were the one who originally made reference to the 'Sooty Owl'.

Bookwyrm Posted - 12 Jul 2003 : 10:01:06
You should be thinking "Tarim" -- that's the PC's name. Or "Enedome" for the soon-to-be familiar (Elvish for "midnight").
The Sage Posted - 12 Jul 2003 : 09:51:11
Yes that is right. I recently saw a 'Sooty Owl' the other day, in the city strangely enough, while I was on my way to work.

The funny thing about it was, when I saw it I automatically thought...Bookwyrm!!! .

Bookwyrm Posted - 12 Jul 2003 : 09:43:57
For the Wisdom score -- maybe. I don't know. I'll have to see what he runs into. It'll be a bit before he gets to fourth level, anyway.
Bookwyrm Posted - 12 Jul 2003 : 09:41:56
It has, at least a little. My character's so big on familiars that when he saw that Artalis' character didn't have one, he convinced him to summon one. Artalis had been thinking of holding off for a pseudodragon, but realized that his character would want one himself, after seeing Kevin and Kethron.

The rest I already told you, in another thread: he's getting a sooty owl. Maybe that one in your backyard -- you said they were moving into the area, didn't you?
The Sage Posted - 12 Jul 2003 : 09:40:42
The character's low Wisdom ability score is a bit of a worry. It is however a good choice for the type of character you are wishing to role-play. I guess you will probably be aiming to increase that score with your ability score bonuses every four levels .

The Sage Posted - 12 Jul 2003 : 09:34:33
That seems pretty well balanced, and considering what you are saying about the mage and familiar, I think works very well. It should make for an interesting role-playing experience.

Bookwyrm Posted - 12 Jul 2003 : 09:30:11
Gee, I really derailed this topic, didn't I?

I'm a bit nervous about it; I don't want him to be overly vulnerable to Will-affecting spells. But I think it's a good choice for the character.

Nope. I left it up to Mumadar.
Bookwyrm Posted - 12 Jul 2003 : 09:18:05
The tressym's a bit of a story. I wanted the tressym. However, I only knew the 2e stats, and didn't know about the Improved Familiar feat (not having gotten anything but the PHB at that point). So, I didn't know that a third-level character couldn't have a tressym. However, I had already built it into the character's backstory. It's part of the reason that my character's such an outsider.

First he's a half-elf. Instant isolation. Then he's highly intelligent. His father would like to boast that he couldn't understand half of what his son talked about. He never used much of his personal wealth for himself, but spent lavishly on his son's education. He sometimes corrected the teachers on mistakes they might make. Most of them didn't mind this; they liked students who paid attention.

I guess you could think of Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter books, but male and less annoying. Unlike her, he isn't so much a show-off as a person who wants to share every fact he knows. Like I said, he can't understand how some people don't like learning for its own sake. This attitude separated him from the rest of the students, though. Even if he isn't a show-off, he often came across as one. Only a few would be friendly, and even then it wasn't real friendship. The only thing he had going for him was that he was the best tutor they could find -- and he didn't charge them, unlike some older students. He genuinely liked helping.

In fact, he'd never had a single friend in his entire life, up until the day he summoned his familiar. Now, in this campaign (probably due to my backstory; it just wiggled its way in) you don't have to choose your familiar beforehand. In effect, the ceremony summons a familiar who is compatible with the spellcaster. Now, you can do it the way it says in the books, but in the campaign, it's more like an enslavement.

So, my character went out into the forest and performed the ceremony. What showed up was the tressym that he named Kethron (Elvish for Cloud Dancer). He's a mischevious rascal who loves playing pranks, and has the intelligence to work things out. He also understands every word of what you're saying, as long as it's in Common, even if he can't speak. A lot of people underestimate him, but he's very charming (he's got this patented "I'm cute, love me!" look ) and loves to play with children.

However, he's fiercely loyal to my character. He also had a hard time understanding that he can't attack people who are mean to his master, like that nasty professor. It's not that he isn't smart enough, but he doesn't like people who don't like my character. That professor (the gold elf pureblood) used Kethron's antics (harmless and otherwise) as part of the reason for kicking my character out. "Improper control over a familiar" was the charge.

In game terms, Mumadar and I worked out a solution. Basically, Kethron's got almost all the benefits of being the familiar of a third-level mage. However, my character doesn't. This is the list of changes I worked out:

Kevin’s automatic Alertness bonus is +1, half of the usual. When he reaches fifth level, it’s at the normal rate.

Share Spells is only possible if Kevin is touching Kethron (i.e., riding on his shoulder).

The empathic link is only good to a quarter mile (at forth level it will be half). Even at that, it’s imperfect; there’s no connection to “place” for scrying, teleporting, etc., unless it sticks out in Kethron’s mind. Communication in an empathic sense is nearly one-sided. Kethron can sense Kevin at all times. Kevin has to concentrate to know where he is (like with the Intuit Direction skill) to do the same, and he still can’t read Kethron’s emotions unless they “spike” (such as from fear or suprise) or Kethron is within five feet and is also concentrating on him.

Finally, the ability to deliver touch spells won’t be available until fourth level, and that’s with a 25% chance of failure in the transfer.

With those changes, I think it balances out. What about you?
The Sage Posted - 12 Jul 2003 : 09:00:53
I like that. 'He's also intelligent (Int 18) but not overly perceptive (Wis 8)'. This would account for alot, and certainly make for interesting role-playing. I don't think I have ever role-played a character with a below 12 Wisdom ability score before.

Do you have any examples of some of the schemes she has planned?.

Bookwyrm Posted - 12 Jul 2003 : 08:54:01
Besides, it isn't really evil for the sake of evil, in her case. Granted, there's some of that; sort of an idle let's-see-how-easy-it-is project. It's not even very serious.

However, she wouldn't mind recruiting my character; he's a gifted wizard, with a pretty good spellbook (he's just out of the College, remember, and they get some extra free spells and discounts on copying). He's also intelligent (Int 18) but not overly perceptive (Wis 8). He also has the Spellcasting Prodigy feat and the Improved Familiar feat, with a tressym. Considering her line of work, she'd want him on her side. If nothing else, then by tricking him into helping out her schemes.
The Sage Posted - 12 Jul 2003 : 08:46:28
Still it would be interesting to consider should your PC advance in enough level's to actually be a threat to this creature. However this may be a mute point, at least for a while, since your mage has left the city, and her influence.
