Hi it has been a long time since I visited this place… it’s nice to be back.
I was looking over some old AD&D files and something struck me.. I am not sure so here I go
I think it was back in first or second edition there were a spell (can’t remember if it was a priest spell ore wizard) that one could see the final moments of a corpse's life. It must have been a divination ore necromancy spell.
There is not much to go one… but I am sure it’s in one of the books but I can’t find it and have searched the net to find it without luck.
Be at peace but sleep with your sword within arm’s length

Posted - 27 Jan 2018 : 14:33:14 D&D never touches upon the notion of qualia. That is, the specific and distinctly unique "sensations" or "experiences" experienced by different individuals exposed to the same stimuli.
Sort of an esoteric notion for young D&D players ... but experiencing the death of another person like yourself would be disturbing, while experiencing the death of another person who is basically a totally different species would be incomprehensible ... completely alien perceptions and understandings anchored in different subjective experiences which don't overlap. Not really relevant to the gaming, just a pedantic discourse, lol. |

Posted - 27 Jan 2018 : 13:45:06 That's the 1st level wizard spell corpse link from the 2E DMGR7: Complete Necromancer's Handbook. Also in late (post-1996?) printings of the 2E Tome of Magic.
The 1995 first-printing DMGR7 had the spell listed as corpse link in the spell indices but as corpse sight in the spell descriptions. But corpse sight already existed as a different spell (somewhat similar to detect undead), and corpse link can encompass more senses than just sight. This error was corrected before the 1996 third-printing. Although I think it's still kind of a dumb spell name either way.
PHBR5: Complete Psionics Handbook had a Clairsentient or Telepathic devotion which basically did the same thing - called something like "fate link" or "fate sense", I think. It's not in my first-printing 1991 PHBR5 but I've seen it in another (obviously later) printing owned by one of my players. And I think it was once downloadable PHBR5 errata which long ago vanished offline. It might also be in other (mostly Dark Sun) products which expanded psionics, but I don't have any handy.
Speak with dead can be used to gain information from the dead, just as accurate though less subjective, if re-experiencing a corpse's last living moments is too gruesome or traumatic. Perhaps worth considering if the person was killed simply by passively observing, hearing, or sensing some kind of lethal magical effect (like a gaze attack or power word). |
